Scott Smith

One note before I rush off to catch a flight back home: Jeff Tedford said redshirt freshman defensive end Scott Smith is transferring. Tedford granted Smith the release from his scholarship last week.
I’ll have much more from Pac-10 media day later.

What’s with so many players leaving the program lately? Smith was only a redshirt freshman. That’s kind of soon to get disillusioned with the program, isn’t it? Anybody know the story on this?

Players could leave for a lot of personal reasons, but I like to think that the caliber of competition at Cal these days forces those lower on the depth chart to leave to get more playing time elsewhere.

Steve, players leave every program all the time for an assortment of reasons. let’s not blow this out of proportion…

It’s true that players leave programs for a variety of reasons. However, when recruited scholarship players leave, it may be a red flag.

Scott had no problem with the program, simply put he was homesick, very close to his family.

Unless he is transferring to the U. of Hawaii, he is still going to be a long way from home. I would guess that is where he may end up if being homesick was the reason for leaving Cal. He was a highly rated recruit and UH would probably be happy to have him.

What I’ve heard is homesickness was Smith’s primary reason for leaving the program.

I read somewhere that Scott Smith may be headed to Louisville where he would be reunited with ex-Cal OL coach Ken Delgado. If true, that would seem to refute the supposed “homesickness” explanation (Scott was raised in Hawaii). Transferring to a school 2500 miles further from home to hook up again with you old position coach would suggest some issues with the new OL line coach at CAl. Anybody have any further info on this?

Scott simply was not comfortable with the Berkeley area and has family in Arizona. He knows that in Arizona he’d have a place to stay on Thanksgiving and would feel much more at ease. I’m his best friend i should know. He’s not worried about where he’d be on the depth chart at Cal. He’s more than capable of playing anywhere.

Now watch how many UCB posters will follow this up with a trashing of Montgomery calling him soft and unwilling to compete.
