Quick update, then more

A quick check-in as I wrap things up from Memorial Stadium. The first day of practice ran late and I just finished things up for tomorrow’s paper. I’ll get more in-depth later, but here are a few quick notes:

Biggest news: Projected starting left tackle Mike Tepper is out with a pectoral injury and pulled hamstring. Tepper suffered the pectoral injury while lifting weights in May and had surgery. He originally hurt the hamstring earlier this summer then re-injured it running conditioning drills Monday morning. Tepper probably won’t practice at all for a week, then just do individual drills for a while. Tepper said he hopes to practice in a full capacity by the last week of camp.

Nate Longshore took first team reps and Kevin Riley took second team reps. Neither quarterback especially stood out, but most of the practice were drills anyway. There wasn’t much opportunity for either guy to really do a whole lot.

Junior college transfer Kamaron Yancy didn’t report. Coach Jeff Tedford said Yancy is finishing up one class after a mix-up.

Verran Tucker, the JC wide receiver, did report and is eligible.

More later….

Any news on WR Sean Young? Didn’t he get a 6th year? He is listed on the current roster. Is he in camp? If so, is he factoring in for playing time?

    Did Nate throw any picks?

What’s the status on Joe Washington? He’s an incoming freshman and is missing from the roster. Is he grayshirting?

    Big D-
Sean Young was granted another year of eligibility, but since he hasn’t gotten much playig time up till now, I wouldn’t expect he will be much of a factor. Tedford seems to be looking past the seniors (Young, Cunningham, Glover) to the freshman receivers and Verran Tucker, a JC transfer.

  • Big D

Can you ask Tedford what he thinks about Aaron Rodgers situation in Green Bay and if he spoke with Aaron recently about this situation?

  • Steve in Concord

Let’s hope Tepper gets healthy in time for the opening game. Getting through practice with few injuries will go a long toward success on the field this season.

  • Shucks about Tepper. Big shucks…that left tackle spot needs to be SOLID come game time.

  • Gerson_Bakar

Darn. if the line is spotty at left tackle, Cal has to be able to roll the pocket away, I do want to give Longshore a fair shake this year, but roll-out passes should be part of the competition.

  • Jonathan Okanes

Big D, yes Sean Young did get his sixth year and he is in camp. He’s not listed on the depth chart but with the uncertainty surrounding the wide recievers, who knows? I’d say almost anyone is in the mix to make a push for playing time if they play well during camp.
I did hear that Tedford had spoken to Rodgers but don’t know the details. If I hear anything else, I’ll be sure to pass it along.

  • CalAlum97

JO, might they switch Mitchell Schwartz to the LT spot if Tepper can’t play come game day? Or move him to RT and Chet Teofilo to LT?

  • Steve in Concord

If Tedford isn’t totally happy with the O-line situation, does that favor starting Riley who has a quicker release and is much more mobile than Longshore?

Also, since we were told after the season ended that Nate’s ankle problem was actually a broken bone and not just a sprain, did he undergo surgery to correct the problem? I don’t recall hearing that he did. Is the ankle completely sound now?
