Tuesday morning

The second day of practice is tonight from 5:15-7:30 p.m. In the meantime…

–Pac-10 guru Ted Miller has published his conference power rankings. It seems Cal is picked to finish fourth in a lot of places, and that’s where Cal is here.

–Michigan State, Cal’s first opponent of the season, also opened camp Monday.

–A correction: I’ve written several times that Cal has only 12 career receptions among its 2008 group of wide receivers. But I started using that number before Sean Young was granted a sixth year of eligibility. So throw in Young’s three career catches, and the number rises to 15.

–One thing I noticed entering the stadium yesterday is the school had removed all those giant billboards of different players on the outside. I was told they will be replaced with updated ones before the season starts.

–Former Cal quarterback Steve Levy dropped by practice Monday and we chatted a little bit about his younger brother, Eric, who is walking on to Cal this season as a guard. Eric Levy started his career at Maryland but transferred to City College of San Francisco, and then tore an ACL and sat out last season. Eric has two years of eligibility left.

More later….

Any Cal Bloggers want to run with this?

I started a a 6-Year Record analysis vs. number of previous Head Coaching positions. Outside of Bob Stoops no “big name” coach has come out of the gates faster than Jeff Tedford.

    Stoops, B 67-12 (6, OK, 1st HC)
    Carroll 65-12 (6, USC, 1st ncaa HC)
    Tedford 50-26 (6 years Cal, 1st HC)
    Rodriguez 50-24 (6 years, WVU, 3rd HC)
Tuberville 51-24 (6 years Auburn, 2nd HC position)
    Snyder 41-27 (6, ASU, 2nd HC)
    Willingham 35-28-1 (6, Stanford, 1st HC)
    Schiano 30-41 (6, Rut, 1st HC)

    Miles 28-21 (4 years OKState, 1st HC)
    Erickson 32-15 (4 years, Idaho 1st HC)
    Neuheisel 33-14 (4 years, Colorado, 1st HC)
    Stoops, M 17-29 (4, AZ, 1st HC)

Notice too that JT is one of only a few 1st time head coaches, not bad!
GB, keep this stat on hand for when the JT-haters rear their ugly heads later in the season!

keep up the good work j.o….updates are appreciated

’97! Don’t curse our Bears just yet, my friend! This might be a season that surprises a lot of us. At least, that’s how I, the constant optimist, am reading it. Go Bears!

  • Jan K Oski

JO, I read elsewhere that Felder gained some weight to 241. Should we expect the added weight to help him wrap up ball carriers this year? Or, is his weight just a natural development due to weight training? I’m basically asking if you see any noticeable difference in his play during fall practice… I don’t expect a reply in a week or 2.

A roundtrip airfare to Las Vegas from Oakland in December is going for $270. Bring along a jacket because it gets cold at Boyd Stadium while you will be watching your team play in the Las Vegas Bowl.

Does anyone know of the existence of anti-troll software that could be employed on these blogs?

  • Steve in Concord

Our resident troll does it’s thing at the S.F. Chron under the user name “the9dwarfs”.

  • Jan K Oski

Yeah Steve, it is called “don’t feed the troll”. She’ll eventually get bored, if no one responds. In a way, I’m feeding her by even responding to you. There’s also another toll. If we see her post and all of us post one reply to J.O., her post will be lost in the shuffle. Amy gets enough love from other schools like MSU Scout.com site, so she’ll go away, eventually. Cal fans take back BearTalk from the sociopath!

  • Gerson_Bakar

The funny thing about anonymous trolls is that they think their petty rants on obscure forums means something because its on the screen.

I saw something on my screen this morning from some unknown guy named STEWART MANDEL on a little known site called SPORTS ILLUSTRATED. Here’s something he comented on:

“After more than two years of grandstanding, it appears the walls are finally caving in on ‘ol Reggie, who remains one of the three most exciting players I’ve ever covered but also, as it turns out, one of the biggest phonies……..his testimony will simply reaffirm everything we already know about the hordes and hordes of extra benefits Bush and his family allegedly received while still a collegiate athlete, at which time the NCAA can officially decree what we’ve long since assumed: That Bush was ineligible at the time.”

In the end, the opinion of professionals like Mandel mean buckets more than insignificant snipes from a lonely troll.

It would be interesting to see how many of the coaches Gerson_Bakar mentioned lost 6 games in their sixth season. We can’t wait too long to solve this problem because support, funding, and recruiting will dry up without reasonable success on the field.

I support the Bears – win or lose!

We’ve seen what Longshore can do in games. It’s time for Riley.

  • Gerson_Bakar

Gbear – what is “waiting too long”? its been 0 games since last season.

i provided a the link if you want to delve deeper into coach records. most coaches have had bad years. to think one off season is too long before the season even starts is a pretty short leash IMHO.

  • Gerson_Bakar

p.s. right off the top of my head, I’m pretty sure Schiano didn’t have a winning season last year, but no one is calling to “fix” things yet and east coast fans are suppossedly more hardcore than us west coast folk.

  • GBear

FYI – Just checked. All of the coaches Gerson_Bakar mention (except Willingham and Tedford) had achieved great consistent success by their sixth year.

  • Gerson_Bakar

I don’t want to get into a big back and forth, I just wanted to put this out for the more rabid bloggers that can really delve into the numbers, mine was a 15 minute cursory glance at names off the top of my head — you’re getting what you want from the stats, so be it. we know what you want.

  • GBear

Agreed. One season doesn’t make a coach. I’ve becme increasingly critical of Tedford after many questionable coaching decisions (IMHO) over several seasons. The decisions to which I’m referring have been discussed at length on these blogs. Win-Loss records is just a piece of the pie.

Although I do not have a good connection with the “Almighty”, I’m praying Tedford surprises us on the upside this season. Like everyone else, just want to see success for our Bears.

  • Jonathan Okanes

Jan, I haven’t talked to Felder yet since camp started but he definitely looks bigger.
