Stay as long as you want

For those who have the Cal media guide committed to memory, you’ll need to make this adjustment: Offensive tackle Chet Teofilo actually is a junior, not a senior as it says in the guide.  Cal sports information director John Sudsbury admitted to this grave mistake, saying he wrote in the media guide that Teofilo redshirted the 2004 season. Teofilo actually didn’t enroll at Cal until the spring of 2005. He played the 2005 season as a defensive lineman than redshirted the ’06 campaign as he made the switch to the offensive line.
So those of you who have been trying to project the 2009 starting offensive line, don’t forget to include Teofilo in the mix.

Will you have lots of details on todays first practice in full pads? Will the remainder of practices all be in full pads?
Also, please answer a question that has me and probably a lot of your readers wondering. Do guys at the bottom of the depth charts, get much practice time or are they primarily spectators doing “mental reps”?
Do they ever hold special sessions devoted to getting these guys some practice time or do these player hold informal sessions among themselves? I realize the majority of practice time needs to be spent on the players most likely to get on the field, but how can players develop without practice time?

Basketball players (even bench warmers) all get plenty of practice time because bodies are needed to hold scrimmages, but with about 100 players on a football squad and only 22 positions practice opportunities are much more limited. The starters and primary back-ups require the bulk of practice time. How much is apportioned to the remainder of the squad?

    Jonathan–
Regarding the “potential” of Cunningham, Young and Ross. I realize these players are question marks as to how they might actually perform in actual game situations. My question was whether the coaches EXPECTATIONS for them should be based on what they have actually observed in practice situations rather than high school scouting reports which are three or four years old by now. I just didn’t see how those reports would hold much relevence at this point in time.

Steve, yes, I will have plenty of details. No, there are some practices in full pads, some in shells and some in helmets. As for the guys at the bottom of the depth chart, they do get reps but just not as much as the guys who actually play.
As for the receivers, of course the coaches don’t base anything on high school scouting reports. I used those as examples as simply one way to try to estimate the strength of the receiving corps. The coaches base their evaluations strictly on what they see in front of them.

    JO,
Thanks for the Teofilo info. I had no idea he will be back in 09, that’s good solid inside info.
What do you think of Chet as an OLman? Seems like the coaches like him but have not seen him perform myself in a game much so tough to judge.
    Thanks!
