Nate and Kevin

Cal coach Jeff Tedford raved about the relationship between Nate Longshore and Kevin Riley as they battle for the starting quarterback job.

“Nate and Kevin have done a really nice job of supporting one another and coaching each other and praising each other,” Tedford said. “It’s not a competition like, ‘I have to do better than you.’ It’s a competition of, ‘I have to do my best to make this team successful and this offense productive.

“They’re both quality guys, both very supportive of one another. It’s not a personal thing at all. The meetings are really refreshing.”

    Jonathan–
I’ve never read anything regarding Nate having surgery on his injured ankle. Did he have surgery to remove the bone chip during the off season or is it still floating around in there? I would think some surgery was in order but a quick google search only brought up stories on the 2005 surgery for his broken leg. Is the ankle problem totally fixed?

Hey JO, just curious, do you know how ticket sales are doing? Will we sell out for the MSU game?

It was exciting to read about the many incoming freshman who caught Tedford’s attention with their outstanding play.
I was also happy to see that the play of receiver Sean Young might earn him some playing time this season. It’s always nice to see a guy who’s been in the program for a long time (sixth year senior) finally get a chance to contribute. Maybe his playing will keep Tedford from having to burn too many of the freshman receivers redshirt years. It appears from the practice reports I’ve read that Marvin Jones is just too talented not to see action this year. It seems that we have a lot of (inexperienced) talent at the WR position and that it’s mostly a matter of determining which players are most ready to play at the outset of the season. As the season progresses we may see a lot of different guys rotated into the line-up as Tedford assesses their abilities and tries to find the best receiver combos.
As opposed to last season when the starting positions on offense were pretty much set; this season should be used to determine who our starters will be next year, when we can make a Rosebowl run with a more experienced Riley, Best/Vereen and receiving corps.

Steve, Nate did not have surgery. As far as I understand it, the chipped bone was part of the sprain and healed with the sprain. He’s perfectly healthy.
(Other) Steve, I’ll try to find out about ticket sales.
