Post-practice: Tuesday

An out-of-town writer stopped by practice today and wanted to know about — surprise — the quarterbacks. Coach Jeff Tedford didn’t break much news, but he did seem to imply that he wouldn’t wait until the first week of the season to name a quarterback if one of them earned it.

“It would be nice if someone would separate himself,” Tedford said. “It just hasn’t happened yet.”

Tedford said the competition so far “goes back and forth.”

“We’ll see who establishes himself in the next couple of weeks,” Tedford said. “If not, we’ll make a decision on who’s going to take the first reps and go from there.”

Good news and bad news on the injury front. The Bears are getting some players back — running backs Tracy Slocum and Shane Vereen, linebacker Anthony Felder and defensive back Brett Johnson all practiced Tuesday. But starting linebacker Worrell Williams suffered an abdominal strain and Tedford wasn’t sure how long he’d be out. Also, linebacker Devin Bishop, who is battling for a starting spot on the outside, tore ligaments in his thumb Monday and had surgery Tuesday morning. But Tedford said he’d be back within a week.

Tedford said defensive back Gary Doxy has been removed the field to concentrate on academics. Doxy is in summer school and Tedford said a decision about his status will be made by the end of the week. Depending on how Doxy does, he may not return to the team.

A couple of interesting lineup tidbits:

–Chris Guarnero, Alex Mack’s backup at center, has been getting some reps at guard. Tuesday, he got every left guard rep with the first team. Richard Fisher, who has seen the majority of first team reps at left guard, played second team center.

–Also, offensive lineman Kevin Bemoll practiced on the defensive line in goal line situations. “He’s another big body (6-4, 325) in the middle,” Tedford said.

Other notes from Tuesday:

–Walk-on David Seawright was perfect on field gaols, outplaying incumbent Jordan Kay. Seawright nailed a 46-yarder right at the end of practice. Tedford said the competition for kickoffs and field goals is definitely on.

–There’s still plenty of camp to go, but Tedford said several freshman are making bids to play right away: Defensive back Bryant Nnabuife (actually a JC trasnfer), nose tackle Kendrick Payne, linebacker Mychal Kendricks, defensive lineman Trevor Guyton, defensive back Josh Hill, tight end Anthony Miller and a handful of wide receivers.

–With Mika Kane still nursing a sprained ankle, the defense experimented with moving Rulon Davis from defensive end to nose tackle.

–Kevin Riley had one of his better days of camp. He played with the first team Tuesday.

–With Jahvid Best resting Tuesday, Slocum played on the first team and ran well.

–Wide receiver Jeremy Ross, who probably is battling freshman Marvin Jones to be the No. 3 receiver, had his best day of camp with several catches.

–Tight end Tad Smith had the highlight of the day, making a leaping catch on a pass from Nate Longshore. He appeared to have the wind knocked out of him momentarily.

–Left tackle Mike Tepper (pectoral muscle surgery) is now wearing a yellow jersey, meaning he’s been cleared to do some football work.

Wow! Your eyes must be exhausted, J.O. That’s some serious intriguing news. Tedford proves again that he is serious about open competition at every position. This is great news for recruits, as if they apply themselves, they’ll be able to contribute immediately. Go BEARS!

FYI: Desmond Bishop is with the Green Bay Packers.,

Desmond Bishop is back! Just kidding JO. I know it was an honest mistake. Get some sleep.

J.O., you mean Devin Bishop (not Desmond)….

  • George

Wow, outstanding update Jonathan! I have several questions:

    1) Is Nnabuife playing at corner or safety?
    2) If Ross and Jones are battling for the no.3 spot, are Calvin and Boateng no.1 and no.2 respectively?
    3) Have you seen Seawright kickoff yet? How much power does he have?

One more thing…I think you meant DEVIN Bishop, not Desmond, heh :)

awesome article. i’m starting to feel a little bit better about tedford if he’s really going to give both qbs a fair shot.

I’m sure Desmond was surprised to learn he had surgery. Oops.
George, Nnabuife is playing both and has really played well. My hunch is he will end up seeing more time at safety. As of right now, I’d say Calvin and Boateng are the top two guys. I’ve seen Seawright kick off a couple of times and so far there hasn’t been a real distinct difference, but the rumor is that he consistently can kick it farther than Kay. He also beat Kay in field goal drills yesterday.
