Thursday afternoon

–Let’s start off with another Michigan State update.

–Even though Saturday officially is the last day of training camp, the first regular season practice basically is tonight because Cal begins putting in its game plan for Michigan State. The big question about tonight’s practice is whether the players running with the first unit are the ones we can officially call starters. Of course, the coaching staff reserves the right to change its lineup around at any time, but you also prefer to have some stability when you are preparing for an opponent. If one of the quarterbacks works exclusively with the first team, we may have an answer. Jeff Tedford will answer those questions after practice, and I, of course, will provide an update as soon as possible.

–One media coverage note: The ABC broadcast team calling the Cal-MIchigan State game is Ron Franklin on play-by-play, Ed Cunningham on color and Heather Cox on the sideline.

I guess we won’t be getting a Gameday visit for the opener.

  • Tony

Appreciate the updates as always, JO. One thing I’m really curious about is who will make up our WR corp. Calvin seems pencilled in for sure…any thoughts on who the other 2 will be? It’s been hard to get a handle on. I’m guessing Young and Ross will be the other two starters, but what of Boateng, Jones, Cunningham? I’d love to see Marvin get some time; from what I’ve heard, he’s been impressive. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Tony, you’re right Calvin is a sure thing. I would have said Boateng was another sure thing, but he’s seemed to fall off a bit here as camp is winding down. Ross has had a pretty quiet camp, while Cunningham has been pretty good. I think right now Sean Young is a starter, with either Boateng, Cunningham or Jones at No. 3. That being said, Ross has come on a little lately so he may be more in the mix. It might become clearer tonight when the team starts practicing for Michigan State and the depth chart takes greater shape.

Thanks for the insight JO. In regard to Boateng…what’s up with him? I’ve heard he has all the physical talent in the world, and even started displaying some work ethic in camp…already back in the doghouse, though?

Another question, if you’ve got the time to respond: how’s the competition btwn Conte and Hagan shaping up? I know a lot of people are high on Chris, but truth be told, the only memories I have of him from last year are getting burned repeatedly in 1-on-1 situations.

Thanks again for all your insights. I must come to this page about 10 times a day haha.

Tony, I think Boateng is kind of a wild card. He does have a lot of physical tools. I think he’ll be fine. He strikes me as the kind of guy who rises to the occassion once the lights come on.
I’d say Conte has an edge right now, but it’s close. And Conte may have got burned a few times last year, but he also displayed some pretty good corner skills at other times. I’m sure they will both play a lot.

  • Davidson

I can’t wait to see the depth chart. I would put Boateng, Calvin and Jones together as our WRs. Add in Riley, and Best and Vereen in our backfield. This is a young team, and we should give the reins to Riley. This will help a lot next year too, giving the team time to gel. We have a chance to surprise a lot of people.

I just can’t wait to see best. I have a feeling he’s going to go ape on everyone. Not like beast mode, his speed and agility are off the charts.

  • Tony

Davidson, there’s definitely something to be said for using this season to begin creating some continuity for next year. It’d be great if Riley started this year given that we’ve got a whole new group of receivers — the quicker they get more comfortable with one another, the better, since it’s almost a given that Kevin will be the starter next year.

Still, with respect to this year…just want whatever is best for the team.

JO, me and my buddies are going stir-crazy re: the QB situation. I know there probably isn’t much you can tell us if the coach is keeping mum, but what’s your take at this point?

  • not a complete troll

some here that riley was named the starter last night. any news?

  • Andrew

Hi JO. Ive enjoyed reading your posts these past weeks. They really pass the time at work haha. I can’t wait to see this depth chart. Do you know what time tonight CAL’s practice is taking place.

  • DallasBear

Have you seen a coverage map for ABC yet?

  • Davis Bear

    What, no Musberger?

“The Wizard of Returns! Look at this guy”

    “Shake ‘n Bake!”

    Davis Bear–

I’ve watched that video about two dozen times. It never fails to make me feel good. I thought Musberger’s call was great. “DeSean Jackson’s going to the end zone.”
