Does the calendar deceive me, or is there actually a game this week? Things are going to heat up now. Let’s get the week started:

–ESPN.com’s Ted Miller says Cal’s Jahvid Best will be the Pac-10’s Offensive Player of the Year this season. He also has some other good stuff, ranking the conference’s toughest schedules (He puts Cal eighth) and highlighting some of the Pac-10’s best games of the season.

Here’s the latest on Saturday’s season-opening opponent, Michigan State, with a look at how some of the Spartans’ young players are coming on.

–ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit released his annual “Herbie Awards,” recognizing just about everything in college football. Cal is pretty well-represented. Herbstreit picks Zack Follett as the third-best outside linebacker in the country.

  1. J.O.–

Thanks for the link to the Herbstreit article; it was most enjoyable. Do you think we will be getting that Gameday visit anytime soon?

Let’s all hope that Jahvid Best lives up to Ted Miller’s expectations for him. 1000 yards running plus 500 yards receiving would go a long way toward making this a successful season. If Vereen’s totals are only 50% of those he will have done okay. And if Riley and the receivers……..

  2. Hey JO, any sense of the team’s mood/level of confidence going into Saturday’s game? From what I’ve been able to gather from your posts and other sources, there is a fairly high level of optimism. It seems like the lack of expectation has actually helped a lot in that regard as well.

  3. I like herbie’s inclusion of Riley as #6 QB.

Saturday just can’t get here fast enough….

  4. Steve – Why not dream of having 2 RBs with + 1,000 yards rushing this year? Forsett just missed that with Lynch by 1 yard, and it has been awhile, since Wallace and White did it.

Tony – Why give anything to MSU to use in the locker room?

    Go Bears!

  5. Jan — not looking to necessarily provide bulletin board material, just curious. Besides, I think that if we’re ready to go, then it won’t matter who says what. Go Bears!

  6. Tony – did you read about the wrestling match between 2 Cal players a week ago? Mack had to separate them. I think that clearly shows some players were ready to go, and they can’t wait for the season to start like us rabid fans. Go Bears!

  7. Jan #6

Maybe the fight was just a result of a heated political discussion. You know….Obama or McCain for Prez.

  8. Tony, I think the team is optimistic but not overconfident. And yes, I think the lack of expectations are a good thing for them. That may have been one of the problems last year.

  9. Thanks for all, JO. Is there any interest in covering the Cal Rugby team?
