A couple pressing post-game issues
By Jonathan Okanes
Saturday, September 13th, 2008 at 4:03 pm in Gameday.
–Jeff Tedford said after today’s game that the officials did indeed review Da’Rel Scott’s run from the 1-yard line that appeared to be a safety on the replay.
–Tedford also said that Shane Vereen suffered an ankle sprain but it doesn’t appear to be serious.
–Most guys said after the game that they didn’t feel affected by the time change. They actually said, if anything, it was the heat and humidity that was the hardest adjustment. But nobody blamed the loss on it or said it was a major factor.
–More than one player pointed out that this year’s team is better-equipped to handle adversity than last year’s because of the improved leadership on the roster. The Bears seem pretty sure the loss wont’ linger.
–One of the major themes during postgame interviews: The Bears got beat on both sides of the ball for most of the game, plain and simple.
–Jahvid Best said he felt a little sore after the game, but not much more than that. He also said the hit he took from Maryland’s Kevin Barnes was the hardest he’d ever taken in his life.

if the officials actually reviewed the tackle in the end zone and didn’t overturn it, they’re either blind or on the take.
September 13th, 2008 at 7:22 pm
I was sitting in the 300 deck and I could see the safety from there. The refs botched a few calls, but Cal was just flat from the get go. That humidity was harsh. I was sitting in the stands not playing in a football game and it affected me. I think the humidity played a huge roll in Cal’s sluggish performance. They won’t admit it, but it played a role.
September 13th, 2008 at 8:23 pm
If the safety was reviewed, why was there no indication on the field that the play was under review and that it had been determined after review that the play was not a safety?
September 13th, 2008 at 8:30 pm
Jahvid Best is one tough hombre. I’ve never seen a guy get the wind knocked out of him, blow chow, then say he only “felt a little sore.” I’m surprised he doesn’t have a bruised sternum. He was touching his chest as though he was in pain the whole second half.
September 14th, 2008 at 7:58 am
I didn’t get to see the game because I’m in the Hurrican Ike area, but I listened on XM Radio and it sounded like the Bears got pounded from the get go.
Yesterday was the worst day for the Pac-10 that I remember and I’ve been following it for a long, long time.
ASU beaten by UNLV (right?), AZ loses to New Mexico, UCLA worst loss since 1929, Stanford loses big to TCU, WSU beaten by Baylor (yes, Baylor), Washington smoked and Cal clobbered by a Maryland team that lost to Middle Tennessee State the week before. Bad week.
September 14th, 2008 at 8:44 am
Wow! That was the worst I have seen Cal play in a long time. The first three quarters were difficult to watch. Maryland really kicked our butts. Beat us in every phase of the game, including coaching. It was if they had our play book! Every time we scored I thought- “OK, if we stop them here..”, but we couldn’t. The coaches and team leaders HAVE to get the guys prepared for the game better. Maryland is a better team than we all thought, but I don’t think they are THAT much better than we are. We blew a great opportunity to play on the East Coast, in their time zone and in front of a national audience. A convincing victory would have set us up for a BCS bowl. I don’t think any of the AP writers think we are all that good. Maybe we’re not. I will tell you one thing, the passing game has to improve. Don’t let the 4th quarter fool you. That was the prevent defense Riley was racking up passing yards on. What were the stats for the first three quarters? Not good. We are probably looking at The Holiday Bowl, at best. We can only hope that this motivates the guys to work hard and get better.
September 14th, 2008 at 9:20 am
Tedford is good for one or more of these “we didn’t show up” games every year…..Arizona, Oregon State, Texas Tech. Last year it extended to 5 games. He did a good job resurrecting the program but maybe he has reached the level of his own competence. His steadfast refusal to address the problem of Bob Gregory is truly mistifying.
September 14th, 2008 at 9:40 am
To all whining Fans, Could it be that Cal just doesn’t have the talent that you think it does? I know that deflates some of your pre-conceived notions that Cal is the best Public University in the world and that translates into a competitive team. But, you obviously haven’t seen the news video of the present-day facilities. It’s on youtube for your viewing pleasure. If I were a top-notch recruit, I’d be very hesistant to accept an offer. Hence, here we are before the SAHPC is completed. You all can write endless diatribes on unacceptable losses, but you’re delusional. Plus, even great teams faulter, anyone ever hear of $C at Stanfraud last year? Anyone know about Notre Dame or Michigan? Jeez, you entitlement people need to find other hobbies.
September 14th, 2008 at 10:20 am
Jan K – yes, it is possible that Cal just doesn’t have the talent. No one here is being delusional. This isn’t the case of a great team missteping, like U$C last year. This is the case of a good team not being prepared. I don’t expect Cal to play for the national championship in football, and I don’t care whether the Bears do, like the U$Cs, Notre Dames, and Michigans of the world. I do expect to be competitive because this top-notch public university that is competitive, if not superior, in just about everything else it does. To me, being competitive is often threatening to make the Rose Bowl (which Tedford has done) and occasionally making it (which he hasn’t, one case because of Mack Brown prostituting himself, and in the other case Tedford blowing the Arizona game). It has been nearly 50 years. In the last 10 years, Stanford and Washington State have gone, and you’re telling me a football recruit is more willing to go there than here? Have you been Furd stadium before it was refurbished? Have you ever been to Moscow, Idaho?
September 14th, 2008 at 10:24 am
What was gratifying was that although the team had been beaten and was clearly out of it for most of the second half, the Bears kept battling. That is the difference on one side between the Longshore-led offense and the Riley-led offense. Riley, who is not consistent, nevertheless brings that “never-say-die, we-can-win-this-thing” attitude. What is conspicuously lacking on the other side, the defense, is a leader. I don’t see Follett stepping up and the one guy with visible swagger, SydQuan, is too inconsistent. Follett’s the guy and needs to assert leadership more – or else we’re in for a lot of disappointments again this season.
September 14th, 2008 at 11:56 am
After watching the game and analyzing the results, it appears that Cal will be ranked somewhere between Delaware and Middle Tennessee State.
September 14th, 2008 at 2:10 pm
After this weekend there are meltdowns all over the Pac 10 boards including this one. Jan K Oski – you are dead wrong. You had the talent in 2006 and 2007. It wasn’t used right. That more than anything else will cause your program to plateau. Years ago when Larry Smith, Ted Tollner and Paul Hackett were HCing our program I heard the same excuses – Players don’t want to come to a place so close to the inner city, etc etc. When there is great coaching great talent shows up but that is only a small part of the equation. Great talent has to be molded into selfless team play. Great talent leads other players to achieve. Your AA center made a complete fool of himself yesterday. He showed no respect for the leadership he has been elevated to. You were not beaten by a team yesterday that had better talent. YOu got outcoached! Those guys knew your plays just as well as their own.

I read this thread on the new BI. Here is the link…http://www.bearinsider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2779
This post is the best one I have read over there as your posters seem to be going through a meltdown after your Maryland game. Unfortunately the poster named “Jan K Oski” (and I assume the same one here) posts another low life, stupid post as he often does on this site. Make sure you read the original one by a “gstepper”. (Someone even said this was a player’s father). Kudos to gstepper. Great post.
September 14th, 2008 at 4:23 pm
Of course, the worst meltdown was when my good friend Jay Heater refused to acknowledge our friendship. That bastard is afraid people will figure out his best columns came from ideas i suggested.
The way he dissed me on this blog? I will now add him to my list of schools and people that i stalk. He’ll regret the day he posted that punking.
September 14th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
Hey JO, shouldn’t stalking be considered illegal and an immediate ban, when someone openly admits?
Looks like those $C Heisman winners are still unable to live up to our Bears in the pros for a 2nd week! While Rodgers continue to led the Packers without a reliable running game, Leinart is still warming the bench and Palmer continues to fizzle (41 QB rating)? Then, non-Heisman winner Cassel threw how many Ints? Clearly, Green Bay put their money on the right guy 2 weeks and counting. Go BEARS!
September 14th, 2008 at 6:08 pm
BOOOOOO!
Cal acted like a second division team in not flying out on Thursday. Even Stanford flew to Dallas on Thursday. Tedford’s making 2.5 million and we can’t pay for another night at the Holiday Inn Bethesda. Don’t tell me another day wouldn’t have made a difference (Even Starkey mentioned it on the radio)
Bush League all the way!
September 14th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
If there is a blame, Blame on the coaches, they should have gone out a day earlier and get prepare. They are all flat out at first. The pace was a couple of second slower at the begining. The hand off is so predictable and slow. They all were still in the sleeping mode. And, they finally woke up at the end. Well, too late.
I believe if they played that game in the afternoon or evening pacific time. There should be a good game.
September 14th, 2008 at 6:27 pm
ASU lost to UNLV, UCLA GOT HAMMERED, Zona lost to New Mexico, Oregon barely got by a middle of the road Big Ten team etc…A few points:
1. There is a lot of parity in college football.
2. There are VERY few great teams in college football that look outstanding week in and week out.
3. The Pac 10 is not very strong this year.
4. This up and down ride will continue for Cal and 90% of the other teams in the nation. That’s just the way it is.
5. Cal will look great again this year, and Cal will look below average again this year.
No need to over-analyze.
September 14th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
“No need to over-analyze.”
I agree Robert, but Tedford has made it a point that away games are business trips. The Athletic Department’s job is to put the Bears in the best position to win. That means flying out on Thursday.
Jet lag is real, and in game that relies on emotion and energy, I feel an extra day would have made a difference.
September 14th, 2008 at 7:37 pm
Dixon, you might be right like so many other Bear fans with your opinion. However, these are young men. When I was 26, and I flew from SFO to Zurich then Prague. I arrived in Prague at midnight, yet on my first day I walked all over Prague on a humid May day. I didn’t skip a bit and went to a club past midnight. Why wouldn’t young athletes be capable of the same? I think the humidity played a bigger part than travelling, and I don’t think an extra day would help with the humidity difference. The thing is we will never know.
Then, there’s a possibility that Maryland’s coaches made the right changes (getting the ball to their speedsters) and specific Terp players (new QB, RB and WR) responded. It isn’t unfathomable if you compare their numbers. Was Tedford ‘n Company outcoached? Perhaps, but this game would have been tied or won by Cal, if little things went the Bears’ way. The biggest thing being Riley finding his touch before the 4th Quarter. If that pass to Morrah at the end of the 2nd Quarter was slightly arched, what could’ve been! Afterall, they only lost by 8 points.
Robert, great summary! But, it’s all right to Sunday QB about Saturday’s play. I just hope people move forward by midweek, not beat the bush to death.
GO BEARS!
September 14th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
My first reaction is that they got out coached, the bears simply were not prepared for this game. I thought the bears were lethargic and out of sync for most of the first half. The certainly got pushed around in the trenches. The O-line was beaten worse then any time in recent memory. They got it together in the fourth qtr. but by then it was too late. RE: their conference competition only Oregon gutted it out so maybe third place isn’t out of the question.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
And were you hitting 220 lb running backs coming at you with a full head of speed? Were you having to take on a 300 pound lineman every play? Another stupid post you moron.
September 14th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
Comments: nice if you discussed with Coach: (1)Next time just try getting in on a Thursday so team can experience humidity…etc and other weather related potential problems the day before….(2)Don’t be rigid in keeping Riely in the pocket. He performs best when allowed to move around in play action and do allow him to run when no one is open as it will loose up the defenses like our opponents seem to do to our defense…(all day long).
September 14th, 2008 at 10:30 pm
The Bears are going to lose several more games this year if they don’t get their kicking game solved. They consistenly gave Maryland the ball on the 40-yard line on every kick-off, and I noticed the same trend in the previous two games.
I watched a lot of College football on Saturday, and it seemed like every team had a guy who could boot the kick-off into the end-zone. This is a painful, glaring deficiency. Also, when is Mike Tepper coming back? Our left tackle with the long flowing hair got roasted one too many times in the game.
I couldn’t believe my eyes when our all-world Alex Mack got flagged for a drive-killing cheapshot in a critical moment of the game. Isn’t he supposed to be one of the leaders? This game was so much like the Tennessee game, it was frightening. The Bears simply got man-handled on both sides of the ball. With the favorable home schedule, I still think Cal can get to the Holiday Bowl just like they did in 2006.
September 14th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
Another thing I beg the coaches do next time, if not this year is over, is to mix in some play action. The plays were so predictable that they were already there before the hand off to Best.
The Terps were fire up at their sideline, and Cal is still try to adjust and to woke up.
Finally when they woke up, they look like the Cal a week earlier.
Go Bears! Get prepare and Beat C.S. at home.
September 14th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Another thing that could have been the game changing moment was the clearly a safety at the end zone, and the ref. blewed it.
September 14th, 2008 at 10:43 pm
Hey, Starting QB Rodger went on 2-0 with perfect thrown 3 TDs, 350+ yards, and no interception with 117.8 passer rating. But, Carlson Palmer, uhh! interceptions after interceptions, Ha…Ha… Who is better.
And, Riley got 3 TDs and 450+ yards, watch out, when he is more mature.
Go Bears!
September 14th, 2008 at 11:44 pm
We have freshmen and sophomores all over the field people. You must be patient. You can’t change out a QB, 3 WR’s, 2 RB’s and not have some problems. I think we will look at lot better as the season goes on, but it may be 2009 or 2010 before we see what this group can do.
More worrisome was the play of our veteran o-line…
September 15th, 2008 at 9:35 am
Yes, going out on Friday was Bush League (as in Reggie, George W. and minor). Shame on Sandy Barbour, Tedford and anybody else involved in making that decision. I’ve been to the South and you don’t get used to the humidity, but an extra day helps you not to cry when you have to leave a place with AC.
With that said, Riley learned to pick apart a Cover 2 defense. He’s a sophomore folks. When the pass isn’t working the run won’t go. And from what I saw MD played soft zone with the occasional blitz the whole game. Receivers were open, but Riley wasn’t finding them until Q4. Let’s hope he has it figured out now.
I liked Riley’s “Never say die” attitude” and his inability to throw picks that would put the game out of reach like several of our recent QB’s.
I’m not picking on Longshore because every QB, except Steve Levy, that has played since Aaron Rodgers put on a Packers jersey has done this. I do have to say that the Packers jersey fits well though.
My brother went to $C so I know it is redundant to say that an $C fan is unpopular and obnoxious, but I like the balance that MoreNC’s brings to the board. Even though he is delusional. After this weekend’s performance any Pac-10 loss this year knocks $C out of contention. And it will happen because the Pac-10 has gotten wise to $C schemes.
Go Bears!
September 15th, 2008 at 10:31 am
MoreNC is a whore, palin and simple. Parity in college football has it’s limits, and it’s hard to break that ceiling, especially with our facilties and academic rep. Cal isn’t known for giving the student-athletes breaks, but it seems that’s the case in other schools…there are a lot of challenges to winning at Cal, which that knuckel head won’t bring up (especially if we’re the upset for USC this year) so I’m surprised Tedford has stayed here as long as he has and that the program has done as well as in the past five years…with all the trouble we’ve gone through to ge new facilities, does anyone really think the best coaches want to come here? USC can give them whatever they want, and the Bush-loving LA community will be happy to pay the players as well…
September 15th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Did Tedford called a timeout hoping for a review, and when it didn’t happen, he didn’t want to risk losing a timeout for an “official review”?
I would like to know the specific rules regarding replay review in the situation. Do college coaches get a “red flag” / request for review? or is it automatic?
September 15th, 2008 at 4:12 pm
Hey Gerson, Read the Daily Cal articles, today. One of them quoted Tedford who said he wanted to take a timeout in that situation with or without the safety question… In addition, it describes the rules better than anywhere else. GO BEARS!
September 15th, 2008 at 4:20 pm
JO, your banner is jinxing our Bears with more of the same. Will it help if I walk over there to your compound and beg your IT guy to change it? Go BEARS!
September 15th, 2008 at 4:36 pm
History tells us that strange things happen in college football. Don’t forget that after Cal looked like a high school team in the loss to Tennessee in 2006 then regrouped and won six straight games en route to a 10-3 season. Or how UCLA beat Teneessee last week and got demolished 59-0 against BYU. Or 15th ranked ASU losing to UNLV Saturday.
USC looks like one of the best teams in the country, so maybe they will beat everyone (except us of course) and go to the BCS Chamionship game, leaving the Rose Bowl open to the second place finisher in the PAC-10. Right now that looks like anybody’s opportunity. It’s a long season and weird things can happen as they did last year.
September 15th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
Jan K. Oski >>If I were a top-notch recruit, I’d be very hesistant to accept an offer<< First, wish you *had been* so we wouldn’t have to put up with your dumb-ass now. You are obnoxious; dangerously close to Amy on the annoying scale. Second, you don’t have a clue, pal.
Anyone deciding on the basis of facilities wouldn’t be interested in a non-top 10 program anyway, so this whole recruiting thing is just a smokescreen. Second, what kind of pansy-ass Amy wannabe are you? Boohoo, we suck. We don’t have new facilities. We have protesters. We have hippies. We have liberals. We don’t have any talent Waaah! Knock it off you little cry baby. You make me sick. The fact is that we have had the second best talent in the conference, on the field, for the last 5 years. Tedford has yet to capitalize on it, but it *has* been there and it is *still* there.
Cal is the greatest public university in the country. THAT’s why we will get talent. Always. The facilities won’t turn the program around, coaching will do that. Do we need new facilities. Yes. Nobody is denying that. But if you think that shiny new digs are going to make the difference, you are even MORE stupid than I thought you were, and that bar was set pretty low.
Go crawl back into your hole with Amy…or go crawl into Amy’s hole, I really don’t care. Just take your stupidity and leave.
September 15th, 2008 at 9:29 pm
I’m a Cal grad that lives on the East coast. It was simply stupid not to bring the team here a day earlier to somewhat acclimate them to our typically horrible weather. I know how oppresive weather can affect athletic perfromance. I hope the football staff learned something. In any case – Go Bears! Good luck this season.
September 15th, 2008 at 9:41 pm
With 12 games in a year and oodles of pressure not to lose even one, who can rise to the occasion consistently? Everyone is beatable. Even the mighty USC hasn’t been able to post an undefeated season since the loss to TX! It’s nitpicking but come on. I will take my lumps as a Cal fan with this loss. It sucks, but it’s early and OOC. Colorado State at home is just what Cal needs to get it going. If I look at the Pac-10, the UCLA, ASU and AZ losses loom larger. Maryland at least looked like a good football team and so did Cal (albeit too late). Losing to UNLV is, well, inexcusable. UCLA couldn’t even make their game look competitive. AZ might just not be that good. I’m upset, but I’m not down on my team, and neither should any other Cal fan.

There was an article written by Bobby Bowden’s son on rivals.com that stated the sad truth Bobby Bowden learned and passed on to his son about every football season. Bobby Bowden explained that every year there will be 1 or 2 games that a team will not be emotionally ready to play, and there is nothing you can do about it. Although humidity and time-change could have been the underlying factor, Bobby Bowden’s theory could have very likely been the culprit because if you’ve watched their first two games then you know that this was not the same Cal team.
Cal fans keep supporting this team wholeheartedly, not only because they’re your favorite team, but because these are unselfish student athletes with stars like Jahvid Best, Follet, and Mack who have their heads on straight.
GO BEARS!!
September 16th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Over the last couple of years, I have learned to take Tedford’s comments and the team’s “unified” comments with a grain of salt. Has anyone noticed that the many excuses made for Longshore (“the receivers ran the wrong route”, “this is a very complex offense”) disappeared overnight once Riley was put in at quarterback?
Travel Decision:
If heat and humidity were ailing the Bears as professed by Tedford and some players, I would have expected their performance to decline as the game progressed and would have seen many more muscle cramps. The Bears sluggish early-game performance and late game awakening has all of the characteristics of jet-lag. Once again, I have to attribute this loss to another poor coaching decision: The decision to travel on Friday. If nothing else, why did Tedford take the chance?
Thoughts about the Offense
Imagine if Tedford had recognized Longshore was not a good fit last year. Riley would be much more experienced now and we might even still have Kyle Reed (who is proving to be worthwhile talent to have on the Bear team) and possibly a better 2007 record and recruiting year.
The offense is eerily similar to last year. It appears the new offensive coordinator has not injected fresh ideas that are sorely needed. Best/Vareen are not durable like a Lynch/Fossett. Running them up the middle will not be successful against formidable opponents and if used as an offensive cornerstone will lead to injuries. Use Best as Walsh would have – as a safety valve outlet receiver. Admittedly, this led to the crushing blow Best suffered, but it also accounted for most of Best’s all-purpose yards.
For those fans that want the Bears to compete at the BCS playoff level, we need to analytically look at our program and the root causes of our mediocre performances. (I appreciate and we fully need those forever optimistic fans. However their place is in the stands and should not influence key program decisions.) Sadly, I believe more and more that Tedford is not the coach to take us there. The telltale sign is our beloved Bears are consistently underperforming to the level of our talent on the field.

Something not to be overlooked…
http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=851163
September 16th, 2008 at 12:41 pm
Something else not to be overlooked regarding Pro Players:
Dwayne Jarrett 36 yards receiving
Steve Smith 34 yards receiving on the year
Matt Leinert: 15 yards passing this year
Carson Palmer: 37.1 QB Rating
Desean Jackson: 216 yards receiving
Aaron Rodgers: 506 yards passing, 117.8 QB rating
Marshawn Lynch 135 yards rushing, 2 TD’s
Since you seem to know everything, how do you explain the slow starts of many of USC’s “stud” alumns? How do you explain the success many of the Cal players have had? (I’ll put money down that Moren will refuse to answer this question and instead try some sort of redirect regarding National Championships or Heisman Victories…what a loser.)

You forgot one for Jabba (every time I read a MoronNC post, I think of Jabba the Hut from Star Wars, so I’ll call it “Jabba”).

For some strange reason, Jabba can only recognize talent if it wears a USC colors, which is pretty ridiculous.
Who gives a rat’s ass if a guy showboats in the NFL? I’ll take a showbaoter with an attitude and 4.29 40 speed who can catch any day.
Hell, Whiteshoes did it all the time and was great. Terrel Owens? If you can manage him, when he gets passes thrown to him, most of the time his team wins. Randy Moss, almost as bad, but he’s a great receiver.
Desean will be a hell of a receiver and returner for at least a few years no matter what kind of attitude he has.
