Thursday night update

Some thoughts as another week of practice comes to a close, and I try to figure out what USC’s loss tonight means for the Pac-10….

–Some pretty significant news tonight: Cal coach Jeff Tedford said freshman nose tackle Kendrick Payne is out for the season. Payne had knee surgery a couple of weeks ago, but Tedford characterized it as minor. Apparently, when surgeons got inside, they found that Payne had torn his medial collateral ligament.

Payne had opened some eyes with his play during training camp and early in the season, so much so that the Bears had him penciled into their plans despite the fact he is a true freshman. It would have been interesting to see just how much playing time he would have got now that Mika Kane is back healthy.

The good news is the Bears can still redshirt Payne and have him for four more years.

–Left guard Chris Guarnero missed another practice with a sprained toe. Tedford said Guarnero would be “available” on Saturday, but I wouldn’t count on him starting. Redshirt sophomore Mark Boskovich took all the first team reps this week and figures to make his first career start against Colorado State.

I’m sure Guarnero would love to play in this one. He is from Arvada, Colorado, which is about an hour away from Colorado State.

–Mitchell Schwartz continues to take reps at left tackle and Chet Teofilo at right tackle. Tedford wouldn’t comment if the Bears are going to line up that way in the game.

–Free safety Bernard Hicks (thigh bruise) shedded his red jersey but still didn’t practice much. Defensive coordinator Bob Gregory said Brett Johnson will start and was unsure how much Hicks would play. He also said redshirt freshman Sean Cattouse will probably see more action as a backup safety.

–Gregory also said defensive end Rulon Davis (foot) is back at full strength. Davis practiced with the first team and figures to return to the starting lineup. Davis didn’t start, but did play, in the Bears’ last game at Maryland.

–Tedford said he expects wide receiver Marvin Jones (sprained knee) to return after the next bye week, meaning he should only miss two games.

    where you at, noNC’sthisyear?

  • toparchitect

what a game! the little beaver down the Troy giant again.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

Now we both know how it is to lose to Oregon State except for one thing. We won’t allow this loss to start the greatest collapse in college football history like some other program I know. Furthermore, it changes nothing. We still have our National Championships, our Pac 10 championships, our yearly BCS bowl game, and a lot left to prove. I can’t wait to see how this Pac 10 season will play out now that we are no longer the hunted. Now we can all follow the Pac 10 a lot more closely for first place than before but it looks like you guys just fell from the Las Vegas bowl to the Emerald Bowl. What’s a $4 bridge toll anyway?

  • Teff EdFord (also from Concord)

More NC’s are coming…yeah, from the SEC!
Had we lost to the Beav (who was beaten by Stanford) Jabba the grotesque one would have had this post:
    UCB = cupcake.
Therefore, perhaps it’s fiting to say USC = cupcake.

But that’s simply not true; but then again, Cal isn’t a cupcake either, idiot. However, USC was defintitely overrated, as was Ohio State. Perhaps ratings and rankings come from history (Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State,)? Those teams have great histories too, but no one cares about that now, do they? I bet they’re fans weren’t blabbing about the past when they lost to teams they shouldn’t have.

“America loves a winner” Basically, that would mean that America loves Beaver!

  • NoBCS

Yeah, you know who…let the spin begin. Here are your options:

    a. It’s ok, SC will still win the Pac-10.
    b. It’s ok, we still have all of those championships and Heismans
    c. It’s ok, we are still SC, at least we aren’t Cal.
    d. All of the above

Oh look, you posted all that before the game was even over. I offer you a new option: It’s ok, you were exposed on national tv for the second year in a row. You now have lost in the two BIGGEST upsets in Pac-10 history in consecutive seasons.

Here’s an idea: Go away. Permanently. Forever.

  • BlueNGold

That’s hilarious. The troll continues to refer to the U. of Sports Corruption football program as ‘we’! You might get the impression that he/she were actually on the field at Reser Stadium last night, instead of being at home with the parents living vicariously through a sports program with which there is no personal relationship whatsoever.

It changes nothing? Oh, really? Does the troll seriously contend that U$C is going to maintain its #1 ranking or continue to contend for the national title after this debacle? You are truly an idiot of you do.

  • Beaver Liquor

The amazing thing about the USC upset was that Oregon St. looked like the better team. They ran the ball right down USC’s throat despite USC having 8 in the box most of the game. If Cushing and/or Maualuga are out for the Oregon or ASU game, I could see USC dropping at least another Pac-10 game.

For all the hype USC gets, it’s sure been awhile since they have won a NC. They are like the Yankees. They have all the best players in the nation yet can’t seem to get to the title game. Considering Petey makes in the $4-5 million range, you would think another Rose Bowl appearance would constitute a disappointing season.

And by the way, this moreNC cat sure is addicted to Cal football considering he’s a “Trojan” fan. I wonder if he will jump on the Beaver bandwagon after we have dominated ‘Sc the last few years.

  • Gerson_Bakar

MoreNCs! Whew. Glad to see that you’re still posting and feeling good about the trojans!

Your brilliant rationalization needs to be heard! You should personally visit every single writer and coach in the country (since it was the only game on TV last night).

Explain to them how the sloppy, uninspired play wasn’t confirmation of a pattern of choke jobs that have become a regular occurence since norm chows players (note: i said players) left.

    So, refresh my memory.
    2006 Choke job against UCLA.
    2007 choke job against Stanford.
    2008 choke job against OSU

losing EVERY YEAR to an unranked, double-digit underdog…

Pete Carrol is nothing without Norm Chow, and every choke job every year proves it.

    Enjoy the weekend!

  • CalAlum97

    U$C = greatest ‘choke’ ever!
(well, maybe second greates choke ever, second to $C’s choke against Stanfurd last season)
cough! cough! cough! somebody do the hiemlich on $C, quick!

  • Lawrence

I guess I didn’t understand what moreNCsarecoming meant. Maybe it really means “moreNewChokejobsarecoming”. BTW, Quiz Rogers just scored again…

  • Kensington

    Amy, your excuses are pathetic.

The reality is this: USC will still probably beat Cal and play in the Rose Bowl this year (maybe even the NC is they win out in strong form). I hope they do make the NC. I’m actually sad that SC lost because it is bad for the Pac-10. The last thing I would consider at this point is going on a USC blog to rub their noses in it. And yet you regularly waste your time on a Cal blog trying to make us feel bad about our improving football program. It’s classless and obnoxious.

Do us all a favor, take the high road and just leave.

  • Big D

I’m glad SC lost. I don’t care about how the Pac-10 looks if SC loses or not. The other 9 teams need to nut up and stop losing their OOC games. I root for the PAc-10 in OOC games and for any other Pac-10 team which is playing SC. I now hope it will be a three way race between CAL, Arizona, and Oregon, with Cal going to the Rose bowl.—Just my 2 cents.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

And more importantly, I have my degree from SC. SC is such a better school than CSUBerkeley. Better athletics, better academics.

You all think you are so much because we lost. Who cares? We can still pound you into the ground. We still have Reggie Bush as our NFL star. Who do you have? We will still crush you when you see us.

We tossed OSU a pity win. They needed it. We didn’t.

  • yaygobears

Let’s hope we bounce back 😀

    go bears!

  • GoldenBear64

Hmmm, let’s see. Your “star’s” rushing stats for 2006 – 2008 = 1298 yds. Marshawn Lynch’s rushing stats for 2007 – 2008 = 1333 yds. Marshawn has 1 less season, yet 35 more yards. And, let’s face it, Bush has been considered somewhat of a disappointment in the NFL. Not my words, here are what some “experts” think: http://bleacherreport.com/articles/4054-reggie-bush-biggest-bust-in-nfl-history and http://www.fanhouse.com/2007/12/04/is-new-orleans-starting-to-sour-on-reggie-bush/ and http://www.trojanwire.com/football/the-disappointment-of-reggie-bush.php.
Not to mention the numerous NCAA rules violations and money he took while playing for $C, and the Heisman he’ll have to give back. You wanna talk about your other “star” Leinart? Didn’t think so…

    Go away you idiot!

  • NoBCS

Whatever with your “degree” in sitting in your parent’s basement… can’t even take a does of your own medicine, can you? That’s ok, I have idea if you can’t take it: GO AWAY! FOREVER.

  • Matt

Hate to break it to you Moron but I go to law school at USC and the students who went to undergrad at Berkeley have done much better in terms of class rank than those kids who went to USC for undergrad. Probably has something to do with the fact that as an undergrad at Berkeley you actually have to study.

  • Lawrence

So you were out on the field playing, NC? You keep saying “we”. What’s your number? What position do you play?

  • Lawrence

Quiz just scored again, on the same play…

  • Gerson_Bakar

    Hey! MoreNCs!

its not “we think we are so much because you lost”. …its that YOU think so much about THEM winning and losing that makes you a clown.

be sure to rub some balm on your pal “rey rey”s knee. we know its an imaginary friendship, but I’d prefer to think you are rubbing his knee as opposed to what you usually rub when you think of trojan players.

    HA HA HA.

have a great weekend! and be sure to think about the salient points over the weekend!

    1) CHOKERS

You all think you are so much because we lost. Who cares?
    LOL, LOSER says what?

  • SAMOBear

With SC losing, this is just a sign that other #1’s are most likely vunerable as well (as in previous years). In addition, it is better to lose early than late if you care about the BCS cosmetics. Unfortunately for us Bear fans, SC will likely run the table from here, although I am not convinced Sanchez is your man during crunch time, but he really wont be tested again until their likely BCS Bowl game. Hate SC/SC Fans as much as everyone on this board, but there is too much invested (right or wrong) in this program for it to not fail or not bounce-back. Go Bears!

  • MoreNCsarecoming

No other team in the nation except for USC knows what it is like to fix every team’s NC game. That’s the way every team that plays us sees the game. We actually cherish the challenge because in the long run it benefits us. We will come out of this great. No more playing down to the competition. We are hungry again and a lot of teams are going to pay.

  • PasadenaBear

How do you know the team is hungry? How do you know the team won’t play down to the competition? Who are you, Pete Carroll? Face it, USC is overrated and should never have been ranked #1 this year. I predict USC will lose next week to Oregon and at Arizona.

  • Jan K Oski

JO, I truly feel sorry for you. You’re a great writer, and your blog is hijacked by a delusional troll and many who like to feed her. Too bad, the CC times doesn’t have the sensibility of the ESPN Forums which collectively banned Amy at the beginning of the season. Yes, Amy cannot post on We Are SC, even though she claims to be an $C Alumni. Now, that’s funny! GO BEARS!

  • Teff EdFord (also from Concord)

I figure that’s what blogs are for – creative writing, as well as picking up some info, which I rarely get from the comment section.
But as far as the delusional troll goes (SC better school – not sure where he evidence of that is)…ignoring the troll is like asking Richard Gere’s doctor to ignore the gerbil – which is basically what MoreNC is, a big odiforous gerbil that’s ransacked your morning paper.
