Bears Lose

I’m not real surprised about Nate getting the start but….here we go again. USC’s defense is going to pin there ears back and go right after the ‘slow as molasses’ Nate. Hopefully part of the game plan on offense is some max protection on most passing plays.
The play book needs to be scaled back a bit IMO and maybe call more of a conservative game. Our D is good enough to keep the game close but the offense can’t turn the ball over or it could get ugly.
I’m pulling for Nate to succeed in this game,it would be a nice way to cap off his career…but it looks like the odds are against him. Cal is a 22 pt underdog.
Go Bears

Having Nate start is the smart move given that Kevin was out of practice for part of the week. Also, we do not know all of the details on his medical situation. Perhaps Kevin can come in if needed. It will be a tough game.
GO BEARS!

Chance for a storybook ending to a career. Good luck Nate! Follow the AR gameplan of a few years back. Short, quick passes, holding onto the ball. Gregory cannot let Sanchez sit back with time!!! Go Bears!

Actually, this is not so bad news. Maybe NL to start the first half and bring in KR to finish the second half. Bottom line is that on offense regardless of NL or KR, the Bears will have to 1) have success running the ball, 2) make positive yards (+5) on first down, and 3) convert better than 30% on 3rd downs. Defensively, we will need to 1) get points/short fields off turnovers, 2) limit the big play and make SC work for their points, and 3) limit SC to <100 yards rushing. Lot to ask, but if we can summon an effort similar to Michigan State tomorrow, we should be OK.
Go Bears!

If Nate doesn’t throw picks and we don’t fumble, we should be fine. Dirty Sanchez should give us opportunities. We need to score TDs every time in the red zone. We have to play an aggressive game on both sides of the ball. Blitz. Go for it on 4th and 3 or more if beyond the 50.

JO, what happened to Cody Jones? I thought you had said he was practicing, again…

USC defensive gameplan: 1. Meet 7 yards behind the center’s backside.
2. Crush anything that is present: Nate’s immobile body.
Over/under on number of third and long Cal faces tomorrow: 12.
No chance with Nate as QB.
Vegas/Sun Bowl here we come.

Rollonubears:
Agree that we will need to be aggressive in the play calling; however, I believe Tedford’s philosophy to win this game will be about field position and as long as we have Anger and the game is within 2 scores, he will try to peg SC deep in their own territory vs go for it on 4th down even if we are inside the SC 50. I dont know that I would disagree given our opportunistic defense.
Vereen needs to step up and have a big game since Best is ailing (foot/elbow)–maybe we can see more of Slocum.
Go Bears!

Agreed! Go all out Bears. Stop the wheel of trolley, and sandwitch the chezzy. If he melt, the Bears will prevail.

Even if we don’t get out of the Coliseum alive today, I have satisfaction knowing that our Bears will play hard and leave everything on the field tonight. There is no quit in this team this year.
More pressure for SC to win tonight than Cal, which may figure into outcome.
Next year, SC had better watch out for that Oct. 3rd game on the schedule–with 10 out of 11 defensive starters gone/drafted next year and we get SC in Berkeley a lot earlier in the year when they are more vunerable.
Go Bears!

On paper, Cal should lose by about 2 or 3 TD’s, but I still believe Cal will get to the Rose Bowl in my lifetime..and I still hope that this may be the year.
This game will be the true indicator of the Cal defense. If Cal can hold USC under 20 pts then one can finally conclude that the defense is solid. The Cal defense has looked very strong at times (vs UCLA & ASU), but also has appeared very soft (vs. Maryland & vs Arizona). It will be interesting to see if the Cal defense can be strong for a full 60 minutes.
The Cal offense been consistently inconsistent. This is probably the least talented offensive squad in the Tedford era. For Cal to have any chance tonight, the offense has to play like we have not seen all year…QB must have time to throw (and throw the ball accurately), WRs must run proper routes and catch the ball, We must have some success in running the ball.
In all probability, Cal will need to force USC into commiting turnovers, and turn those mistakes into points. Cal will also need to win the special teams battle, because clearly the talent level for USC is superior to Cal and Cal will need help is the other phases of the game in order to have a chance!

This game will be the true indicator of the Cal defense. >>>>> USC will wear down your D by the 3rd Q. Expect at least one TD over 50 yards on a pass to either Johnson or Williams.
For Cal to have any chance tonight, the offense has to play like we have not seen all year…QB must have time to throw (and throw the ball accurately), WRs must run proper routes and catch the ball, We must have some success in running the ball.>>>>>>It won’t happen. You are playing against one of the best Ds ever assembled under the Pete Carroll era. He will shut down your run game, shut down those short outs and dump offs that have become part of Tedford’s conservative play calling and force Longshore out of the pocket. We will intercept at least two and have at least 5 sacks. The pressure will be relentless.
Cal will also need to win the special teams battle, because clearly the talent level for USC is superior to Cal and Cal will need help is the other phases of the game in order to have a chance! >>>>>>> Your field goal kicker will have never played in a game like this and choke more than once. USC will also block one of your punts because even though your punter can boom an occasional one he needs a lot of time. Pac 10 teams have figured this out. PUCLA blocked one. Oregon partially got one.

Four words come to mind after hearing this news…”Pete Carroll Blitz Party”.

Who is the OC for Stanford? That guy rocks. Great playcalling. Stanford will be our most difficult opponent for the remainder of the year. I hope we don’t overlook Cal State today.

I am a Bear faithful, Blue and Gold tried and true, but my concern today will be Tedford and his staff. Will they be able to call a game that will allow our Bears to be successful? Or will we see the same Tedford results we have in years past and continue to fall short? I think Tedford does a great job preparing his teams and the guys know what to do, but I just don’t see him being ballsy like Pete Carroll and his staff. Will he go for it on some fourth downs? Will he take a shot once and awhile if backed up deep in his own territory? Will he be able to call a play to punch the team in from 1st and goal? Will they be able to take advantage of a Trojan D that can have tendency to over pursue? Yes there are always risks involved, but without high risk, sometimes there is no reward. And I am tired of seeing the Bears play a decent 1st half, get out coached in the 2nd not making proper adjustments, and losing games. I hope they play a great 60 minutes and I hope the coaching staff proves me wrong. If Jim Harbaugh and last year’s Stanford team can do it, CAL can do it. But it will be up to our coaches to prove themselves. Because until I see it, I still think Carroll and his staff are the best in the Pac-10.
Go Bears!!!
