Basketball: Early opening night review

A couple quick notes on Cal’s 68-56 opening-night victory over Pacific:

– Coach Mike Montgomery said center Jordan Wilkes suffered only cramps, nothing more serious, when he had to come out of the game a couple times in the second half. Wilkes finished with six points and six rebounds and his understudy, redshirt freshman Max Zhang, contributed five points and three rebounds. In other words: Cal got 11 points, 9 rebounds from its center position. Not bad.

– Forward Harper Kamp did not practice at all in the nine days between the Bears’ Nov. 6 exhibition against Seattle Pacific and Saturday’s game, according to Montgomery. Kamp played 24 minutes against the Tigers, more than expected because starter Jamal Boykin got into early foul trouble. Kamp did not score, but had six rebounds.

Montgomery said he’s not sure when Kamp will practice again, but hopes he’ll be ready for Tuesday’s game against USF.

– Point guard Jerome Randle played a remarkably efficient game, scoring 24 points on just eight shots from the field. He was 8-for-9 from the free-throw line, including 4-for-4 in the final 2 minutes.
