Football: Big Game week
By Jonathan Okanes
Sunday, November 16th, 2008 at 9:41 pm in upcoming game.
Usually, there is no media access with the team on Mondays. But tomorrow is the Big Game press luncheon in San Francisco, so I’ll have some stuff to report. That’s in lieu of the usual Tuesday press luncheon, which won’t take place this week.

Question for all of you: In this day and age does getting to a minor bowl game mean anything? The 34 bowl games provide openings for 68 teams, which means well more than half the 119 Bowl Subdivision (formerly I-A) teams will get a bowl berth. To be eligible for a bowl, a team must have at least a 6-6 record, and so far, 60 teams have met that standard. Last year, 73 teams were bowl eligible, and it’s a good bet at least eight more will get there this season.
What’s the big deal right except if you think like a loser.

A bowl game, no matter which, gives the staff essentially another spring ball to evaluate returning players, particularly the younger ones who have not had many opportunities to play.
Every bowl game is on TV so it also provides exposure for recruits during the critical last phases of the recruiting season. Recruits coming on December visists get to see how the team practices.
Since the Pac 10 splits the bowl money among all 10 teams it does not mean a financial windfall to a school going to a minor bowl game, but every little bit helps the athletic department. Fans and alums who go to bowl games and have fun are more likely to donate money or increase their donations (generally speaking, though difficult in this economy).
If you complain that more than half of the teams get to go to a bowl so it is not a very prestigious event, then the reverse theory is also true. If you don’t make a bowl game when more than half of the D-IA teams do, it looks even worse and will be used against you in recruiting.
There are plenty of reasons why it is a big deal.

Question for just one of you: — the little Moron freak. In this day and age does getting to post to a minor paper’s blog mean anything? All the real discussion happens on the boards. When you are banned, don’t you just feel like a loser?
And even if you sneak on, doesn’t the fact that you have to hide your true persona frustrate you. Just how bad was it when sn after sn kept getting knocked down. Do you feel like a fat old man or what?

Amy, why do you ask yourself questions like this, when $C will be playing in the Holiday Bowl against second tier competition?

Amy, why do you ask yourself questions like this, when $C will be playing in the Holiday Bowl against second tier competition?>>>>> SC is either in the Rose Bowl or another BCS bowl. No one can resist our draw at the gate and on TV. Plus the chance of saying that you played USC and beat USC is just to great of a temptation. Watch and you will see.

Is it possible Oregon State could play Penn State in the Rose Bowl?
November 18th, 2008 at 11:39 am
At the risk of being accused of heresy, having Oregon State and SC going to BCS games is pretty good scenario. I realize that the ultimate goal is to have Cal in the Rose Bowl, but having OSU in the Rose Bowl because they are entitled by virtue of being a the Pac-10 co-champ with the head-to-head victory, and USC going to the Sugar or Fiesta bowl will mean an additional $24M to the Pac 10. Since that’s split among the schools, that’s $2.4M per school plus whatever bowl money they pull in.
