Basketball: We’ll all miss Pete

It’s a sad day, not just for Cal fans but for all of basketball.

Pete Newell, who died Monday morning at age 93, was such a fierce and intense competitor he was convinced by his doctors to retire from active coaching way back in 1960. His Golden Bears had won the 1959 NCAA title and were runners-up in ‘60. He won his final eight matchups with UCLA legend John Wooden. He was just 44.

Busy with elementary school at the time, I didn’t know Pete back then. But I’ve interviewed him countless times over the past 15 years, and consider that one of the personal and professional blessings of my life.

Newell was a generous genius, always willing to share his time and his almost intimidating knowledge of the game. He was eager to work with young, budding talent, willing to share with his coaching counterparts, and never too busy to answer a reporter’s questions.

In or outside basketball, I have met no one else quite like Pete Newell, in tune with the game almost a half-century after he “retired.” His old players and coaching buddies are missing him terribly tonight. And I can understand why.

If you have a story about Pete or just a reaction to his passing, I welcome you to share it with BearTalk readers.
