Basketball coaching icon Pete Newell, who died Monday at age 93, will be remembered next Monday at a Mass, then buried Tuesday. Both events are private for family and close friends.

The former USF and Cal coach will be honored at a memorial celebration open to the public on Monday, Dec. 15 at Sacred Heart Chapel on the campus of his Newell’s alma mater of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles. The event will be held from 9 to 11 a.m.

The Newell family soon will have an announcement regarding to whom donations may be made in Newell’s name, in accordance with his wishes.
