Here’s an ongoing update on the action at tonight’s Cal vs. North Carolina A&T game at Haas Pavilion:

*****************************************************************

FINAL: Cal 82, North Carolina A&T 47. The Bears improved to 4-0 and closed out their season-opening homestand by routing the Aggies. Cal has won its first four games by margins of at least 10 points for the first time since the 1952-53 season, when one of those games included the alumni. Point guard Jerome Randle led the Bears with 20 points, redshirt freshman Omondi Amoke scored a career-best 11 off the bench and Theo Robertson overcame an off shooting night with seven points, six rebounds and five assists. Cal plays next on Friday at UNLV.

*****************************************************************

7:58 2nd H: This is over. Cal leads 67-40 and A&T is turning the ball over at every opportunity. Ed Jones, their leading scorer, finally got on the board with 8:37 left, but it’s too late. Randle has 20 points. The Aggies have 13 turnovers and are shooting 35 percent. Barring a catastrophe, Mike Montgomery will become the first coach to win his first four games at Cal since Rene Herrerias in 1960-61.

*****************************************************************

11:55 2nd H: Bears’ lead is 55-36. They’re doing a bit better job again keeping A&T away from the offensive boards. The lead would be a bit bigger except that Harper Kamp and Jamal Boykin each missed a free throw on recent possessions. Randle has 17 points to lead Cal, and A&T’s top scorer, Ed Jones, still is scoreless.

*****************************************************************

14:27 2nd H: Cal’s lead reached 51-27 but all is not good. The Aggies are beginning to hurt the Bears inside, and are collecting second-chance opportunities most times down the court. They have trimmed the margin to 51-33 and Robert Johnson is going to the foul line to try to complete a 3-point play. A&T has scored 10 points this half, all in the key.

*****************************************************************

HALFTIME: Cal leads 40-23 after extending a 28-17 lead to 40-19 with a 12-2 run. Jerome Randle had six points during the burst, including a four-point play. Randle has 12 points and the Bears are shooting 46.7 percent, including 3-for-6 from the 3-point arc. A&T is convering 32.1 percent and is 0-for-7 from deep. Cal has a 22-14 rebounding edge, although A&T did score the half’s final two baskets on put-backs.

*****************************************************************

3:04 1st H: Cal’s lead is up to 30-17. Theo Robertson has seven points, five rebounds and three assists. Freshman D.J. Seeley is getting plenty of run at shooting guard, as Montgomery sits Patrick Christopher and Jorge Gutierrez, each with two fouls.

*****************************************************************

7:44 1st H: The Bears’ lead reaches double digits for the first time at 21-11 with freshman Omondi Amoke going to the foul line after the timeout to try to complete a 3-point play. Jerome Randle finally came out with 8:34 left, the last of Cal’s starters to get a blow. Cal is shooting just 41.2 percent, but the Aggies are far worse at 23.5 percent.

*****************************************************************

11:24 1st H: Bears extend lead to 14-9, thanks in part to A&T’s 23-percent (3-for-13) shooting. Cal is outrebounding the Aggies 12-6 and has allowed a second shot only once.

*****************************************************************

14:51 1st H: Cal leads 9-7 at the first media timeout. The Bears made just one of their first six shots, but have not turned the ball over against consistent full-court pressure by the Aggies. A&T point guard Tavarus Alston just picked up his second foul.

*****************************************************************

LINEUPS: The Bears are going with their usual five — Jerome Randle, Patrick Christopher, Theo Robertson, Jamal Boykin and Jordan Wilkes. For North Carolina A&T, senior forward Robert Johnson is back in the starting lineup after missing Saturday’s game at UNLV with an ankle sprain.

*****************************************************************

RECORDS: Cal 3-0, North Carolina A&T 2-2.
