Cal will host a memorial service Wednesday for the late Pete Newell, who died on Nov. 17 at the age of 93. The event, which is open to the public, will start shortly after 5 p.m. at the Pauley Ballroom, located on the second floor of the ASUC store at the corner of Bancroft and Telegraph.
Speakers at the tribute will be former Newell players Earl Robinson and Jim Langley, former Newell assistant coach Rupe Ricksen, one-time Cal sports information director Bob Steiner, and Sandy Barbour, director of athletics.
Newell coached the Bears to the 1959 NCAA championship, then a return trip to the Final Four in ’60.
The service will precede Cal’s 7:30 p.m. game against DePaul at Haas Pavilion.
