More than 200 friends and former players gathered tonight before Cal’s game against DePaul to pay tribute to former Golden Bears coach Pete Newell, who died Nov. 17 at the age of 93.

The celebration of Newell’s life was held at the Pauley Ballroom on the Cal campus and attracted the likes of Earl Robinson, Darrall Imhoff, Joe Kapp, Russ Critchfield, Lou Campanelli and Dick Kuchen. Louis Reynaud, an assistant to Ben Braun both at Cal and now at Rice, also was on hand.

Former Warriors player and coach Al Attles and former Warriors owner Franklin Mieuli attended the event.

A half-dozen speakers told warm and sometimes hilarious stories about Newell, and the Cal Straw Hat Band played.
