Basketball: A good New Year’s Eve for Bears

By Jeff Faraudo
Wednesday, December 31st, 2008 at 7:46 pm in Basketball.

The final day of 2008 proved to be a good one for the Cal basketball team, even though it didn’t play.

Two teams the Bears beat during the non-conference schedule posted big wins today, which will reflect well on Cal in the computer rankings. Utah knocked off Gonzaga 66-65 and UNLV got out of Louisville with a 56-55 victory.

The Bears began Wednesday at No. 27 in the Sagarin ratings. We’ll see if they get a little bump on Thursday.

Happy New Year!

Good point Jeff. I followed those scores yesterday thinking it would provide a nice bump for the Bears if they (the Utes & Runnin Rebs) could get the upset victories. Too bad Nevada couldn’t take out North Carolina but no one really expected that to happen. This weekend is going to be real big for the Bears. One win is a must but being at home you’d really like to get both. Should be tough.

Turns out Cal didn’t move up a single spot in the Sagarin ratings after big wins by UNLV and Utah on New Year’s Eve. But those results will help the Bears if they put themselves in position to be in the discussion for a postseason berth. Lots of work to do before then.
