Football: Final polls

I’m mildly surprised that Cal didn’t wind up in the final Associated Press top 25. The Bears were the first team under “others receiving votes,” meaning they essentially finish the year ranked No. 26. Cal finished nine points behind No. 25 BYU.

Of course, all the teams directly ahead of them can make good arguments to be ranked, as can Cal. The Bears did finish No. 25 in the final USA Today poll.

freakin’ michigan state was in there with the same record as Cal and we beat them!!

yea..but one of those losses was to georgia…in the bowl game…

That Michigan State is ranked but Cal is not is a total joke. Same record, Cal wins its Bowl Game, Michigan State loses it Bowl Game, and Cal actually beat Michigan State.

Indeed, the rankings of the Big-10 were ludicruous. Ohio State loses its Bowl Game but ends up moving up a spot. Penn State loses but doesn’t move at all.

    MSU vs Cal

    Quality wins
MSU: none (maybe over way overrated #20 Iowa)
    Cal: #10 Oregon, #24 MSU

    Quality losses
MSU: #8 Penn St, #9 Ohio St, #13 Georgia, #26 Cal
Cal: #3 USC, #18 Oregon St.

    “Bad” losses
    MSU: none
    Cal: #36 Arizona, Maryland

    Head-to-Head
    Cal

If you examine the resumes like this it looks pretty close but I think the voters put MSU ahead of Cal based on the fact that they only lost to good teams. I think losing to Maryland (which looked better earlier in the season but not that great now) and Arizona (Mike Stoop’s team can never hold it together for an entire season) really handicapped us in the minds of most voters across the country. I personally think Cal should be ahead of MSU because of the head-to-head result and the fact that the Pac-10 schedule is tougher than the Big Ten schedule as a whole.

    Cal would crush BYU.

Polls are BS. The BcS is BS.
What we end up with every year, but it was especially obvious this year, is the equivalent of the NCAA Basketball tournement ending after the final four had been determined and a bunch of biased sportswriters (not you JO) voting for Florida.
    Huh?
Anybody want to see Florida vs. USC?
    Utah vs. Texas?
    Not gonna happen.
The “people” want it to happen but a few really rich guys don’t; might cut into their profits. So much for democracy.
And Cal is ALWAYS disrespected. Alex Mack should have been first team All-American. Zack Follett should have been first team all Pac-10. Cal should have gone to the Rose Bowl in 2004 but Mack “the Whiner” Brown sniveled his Texas twits into it.
I can go way back: in 1974 Steve Bartkowski was the number one draft pick of the Atlanta Falcons. Did he win the Heisman? Hell no! They gave it to Archie Griffin of Ohio State for the SECOND TIME in a row! And that’s the one and only time that has ever happened.
You can draw your own conclusions but for me it’s clear that a lot of people resent and dislike Cal. Maybe because only really smart people can go to school there. Or maybe because it represents the education of all the people and not just the elitist rich.
There is only one way that Cal will get treated fairly by the sports media: by winning!! They cannot deny that!

    Sorry, in advance, for ranting.

Other Monster tower OL, Ragland, an underrated commit will help cal the running game and pass defense.

    Go Bears!
