Basketball: Morning after UW win

By Jeff Faraudo
Sunday, January 11th, 2009 at 7:53 am in Basketball.

Here’s my story from the Sunday morning editions on Cal’s remarkable 88-85 triple-overtime victory at Washington. And Bob Condotta’s account from the Seattle Times.

And some more tidbits from the morning after:

– Cal is now ranked No. 10 according to RealTimeRPI.com, and No. 13 in the Sagarin computer ratings.

– With 15 victories, the Bears are tied for third nationally for the most wins. Clemson is 16-0 and Syracuse 16-1, with Cal (15-2), Oklahoma (15-1), Marquette (15-2) and Utah State (15-1) next.

– The Bears already have more victories in Mike Montgomery’s first season than they did in 29 of the past 48 full campaigns.

– Junior guard Patrick Christopher, who had a career-high 27 points, has topped 20 in every Pac-10 contest and is averaging 23.0 for those four games.

– The game was the longest played by Cal since a famous 107-102 five-overtime conquest of Oregon back in 1977.

Cal 88, Washington 85, 3 OT

   – HEADLINER: There were many, but we’ll give it to Christopher, who had 27 points, 11 rebounds and played 53 of the game’s 55 minutes, the last 18:51 after picking up his fourth foul.
   – MOMENT THAT MATTERED: How do you pick just one? We’ll take Jerome Randle’s pump-fake 3-point shot with 43.9 seconds left in regulation that forced OT. No, maybe Christopher’s 3-pointer that tied it in the first OT. Or freshman D.J. Seeley’s put-back and free throw with 1.3 seconds left in the second extra period. Let’s not forget Theo Robertson’s go-ahead driving layup and free throw with 15.2 seconds left in the final OT.
   – MAGIC NUMBER: 46 _ Cal’s rebound total — four more than Washington, which entered the game leading the nation in rebound margin at plus-12.0 per game.
   – NEXT UP: Finally, this one . . . Mike Montgomery’s return to Stanford next Saturday, where he coached 18 seasons. Shouldn’t be much buildup for this one, right?

Such an impressive win by the Bears. Seeley sure made an impressive clutch free throw. For a true frosh to hit that in that situation took something special. Him and Guttierez sure were a pleasure to watch contribute to that victory in the 3rd OT. They jumped right in and played confident and tough when JR fouled out. The thing that impresses me the most about this team is the depth they have. No matter who is in there, they play hard, smart, and tough. I think this team will just get better as we get closer to March.
The rest of the Pac 10 is sweating Mike Montgomery being back and pushing the top of the conference standings already.

That was a huge win. While Cal rebounded and scored well, it was more about guts however. Great stuff.

That win yesterday was all heart–most amazing Pac-10 win since the Pac-10 tourney triple OT win vs Oregon a few years back–seems like they played that way at times last year under Braun–but the difference is confidence and coaching (especially drawing up plays out of time outs). I think the team plays responds defensively with Jorge in there. Go Bears!

I’ve watched the Cal vs Wash. game three times so far. Great game. I’m watching the UCLA vs USC game and even USC doesn’t have volleyball lines on there court. When are we going to get rid of our lines? Get a second court to lay over. We will never get the top recruites till we get rid of them. No basketball school has them.

Best college basketball game I’ve seen…

I agree with VatoZapato. My neighbors who are not even CAL alums, just casual fans were jumping up for joy and high fiving. By far, the BEST CAL game I have ever seen in 20 years.

Woooooooooooow!!! Number 22/23 Cal Golden Bears Basketball! I did not expect for us to be ranked on Jan. 12, 2009 17 games into the season. Now I just hope we can keep it up. Tough game at Stanford! But if we win that we have cupcakes against the Oregons the next week. There is a huge possibility that we could be 18-2, 7-0 going into showdowns down south. That would be incredble. Go Bears. I wish we had more coverage of the Bears down here in the South Bay.
