It’s no surprise, but Cal has found its way into the Top-25 polls this morning.
The Associated Press writers poll lists Cal at No. 22, the Bears’ first AP ranking since the week entering the 2003 Pac-10 tournament, when they were No. 24 before losing to USC. Cal reached as high as No. 18 several weeks earlier in 2002-03.
The Bears also are No. 23 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll, while Saint Mary’s, at 15-1, snagged the No. 25 spot there.
At 15-2, Cal is off to its best start since 1959-60, when it was 28-1 before losing to Ohio State in the national championship game. The Bears are 4-0 in Pac-10 play and face Stanford on Saturday in coach Mike Montgomery’s return to Maples Pavilion. Tipoff is 5 p.m.

I was at the Bears-Huskies game Saturday at Hec Ed (or BankOne, I guess). It was arguably the best college game I have ever seen. What impressed me most about the Bears was the play of freshmen Jorge Guiterrez and DJ Seeley. Jorge did an outstanding job slowing down Isiah Thomas in the 2nd half. He also made two HUGE plays in the 3rd overtime, subbing for Randle. DJ Seeley’s 3 point play with seconds left in the 2nd overtime was probably the play of the game. Great job Bears, you made my weekend!

True, True, Rollonyoubears.
Lots of Cal scholarships up for grabs for June 2010 graduates! Only 1 has been filled so far: Allen Crabbe, a 6’4″ outside shooter. Many other top schools already have lots of commits from many of the top high school juniors. Now is the time to attract these guys to Cal and Monty, before they’ve all committed elsewhere and are gone. You can read about Crabbe, et al, here:

80% of a coach’s job is accomplished in recruits. REALLY hard to win without the pure athletic ability. The other 20%, X’s and O’s, then push you over the top to victories.
The games on the court are fun. So is the recruiting battle/game.
Go Monty!
