Cal football: Short Hasiak item

Wes Nakama of the Honolulu Advertiser, who used to work with us here, passed along this quote from Stan Hasiak after picking UCLA over Cal:

“I think the ‘gut choice’ is usually the right choice. I just felt better going to UCLA.”

  1. Chubbychaser Says:

We don’t want folks who think with their gut. We just got over 8 years of an idiot thinking with his gut. Stan, I hope you enjoy UCLA when they get put on probation due to slick Rick!

  2. Tom Says:

There’s talk on a Bruins page about how UCLA coach’s “Ace In The Hole” in recruiting Hasiak was…

“Bruins coach Rick Neuheisel hired intern Vae Tata as a full-time assistant for a couple of weeks so Tata could go out on the road recruiting. It was cleared through the Pac-10 and the NCAA, and Tata passed the recruiting test so he could go on the road. He spent two weeks in Hawaii, and from everything I understand, did an awesome job. Tata is a former UCLA player from the mid 1990s.”

Sounds like Tedford needed to escalate the arms race on this one. Would be interesting to hear the Cal staff’s un-raw reaction to this UCLA assertion as to how they won this recruiting battle.

  3. DJ Says:

Children sometimes do dumb things. These ARE children and choosing UCLA over Cal WAS a dumb thing. In time he will come to understand that. Besides, anyone who chooses UCLA over Cal probably isn’t smart enough to remain academically eligible at Cal, anyway.

Bottom-line is, who cares? Not to UCLA which historically has highly-rated recruiting classes and *miserable* win-loss records. And not to Cal that has brought in solid talent to complement what they already have.

  4. Calduke Says:

    The LA Times says Norm Chow was the difference;
He has been there, worked there, lived there and made Stan feel(gut) more comfortable.

Maybe UCLA was his choice from the beginning and his flip-flopping was a need for attention.

He was a big loss and hope the Cal coaching staff learned some moves from ‘slick Rick’.

  5. cal85 Says:

Does he really need to learn these moves? There will always be side shows like ‘slick rick’ around. And, like side shows, they will come and go. I think it’s mostly sad for the athletes that get sucked into these situations.

Alex Mack sat for a year and it seemed to work out pretty well for him. Hasiak won’t be the last blue chip to shun Cal, no matter what kind of tricks Tedford decides to employ or not.

I’m getting very tired of the Tedford bashing I’ve seen the last couple of days. Yes, the program is now finally at a point where it can actually disappoint. But, as close as we could be to the Rose Bowl, we’re equally as many steps away from the Holmoe era or something like it.

    Go Bears!

  6. wehofx Says:

Cal85, couldn’t agree more about JT. He is a very good football coach with the potential to be great. He also has too much integrity to stoop to slick rick’s methods. Or, unlike $C, you will never see any of his kids taking classes at LA Trade Tech – that is not hyperbole, Brian Cushing among other starters took Spanish classes at LA Trade Tech.

The academic demands at Cal says, to me, that if we’re in the Rose Bowl hunt every few years and the BCS every 4 or 5, JT is doing a great job. And I am one happy Bear backer.

Case in point, in ’05 if A Rodgers came back for his Senior year, I think that team would have been in the Rose Bowl – with $C at home – and made a BCS run. I mean look at what they did with J Ayoob.

    GO BEARS!

  7. Joey Says:

Maybe by Hasiak’s senior year will Rick turn UCLA into a meaningful bowl winner. But chances are Rick will be gone by then.

  8. MoreNCsarecoming Says:

I think it is time for you guys to move on. I told you you were not going to get Hasiak. So what? We didn’t get Teo or Burfict (and we really didn’t want Carroll). You play with what you got. It is that simple.

  9. GoldenBear77 Says:

Here is an old timer’s view (not really that old, or at least I don’t feel it) of the sea change that has taken place in CAL football, and CAL recruiting under JT.
When I first listened to CAL games, when I played there, and up to the time of JT, our seasons were, with some exceptions, fairly predictable. We put a competitive team on the field each season, won some early games, and as the season went on, and injuries took their toll, became less competitive. In my opinon, that was because our recruiting had to focus on playing time. That is, we could sell the program to a few really good players because they knew they would play (you can only sell this to so many kids), but once those players were injured, the drop-off to the next level was fairly large.
Enter JT, and he has been able to recruit depth. For instance, last year something like 11 different offensive linemen made starts, and despite this, CAL won the last 2 Pac-10 games and a bowl game (that is, we were still able to finish strong). Yes, I am discounting the 2007 season as an aberation. Another place to look is at running back, and (although the jury is still out so to speak) even quarterback. The bottom line is that JT has been able to transform the recruiting process from “playing time” to “playing at CAL.” Is it perfect, and we get every recruit we want? No. Is it better, and has the quality of the front line player improved, and, perhaps more importantly, the back-up? Yes. Will it continue to improve? In my opinion, Yes, especially after next year’s 10 or 11 win season.

  10. Will Says:

Moron, last time I checked, I agreed that Kennard was going to $C. And you also told us that YOU guys would be getting Hasiak. So looks like your “source” isn’t that great. Get a life, my friend.

  11. AmyFan4Life Says:

Amy, would you answer the question? How did fat Charlie steal 4 highly rated recruits from Pete? How could a perenial powerhouse loss 4 out of 4 to a weak independent?

  12. AmyFan4Life Says:

And, this question, too… Why 5 safeties? Was Pete competing with Hairball for the most at one position?

Finally, how’s the Reggie Wright doing, today?

  13. VatoZapato Says:

What’s up GoldenBear77?! Way to represent. I like your comment.

How’s TheAdvisingBear doing? He isn’t very well liked on the ESPN WeAreSC board. You better get him to slow down over there. I even see how the Bear fans are riding him.

  15. Devon Kennard Says:

I’m sure the advising bear is doing okay and is guiding students towards graduation. Which, of course, is something you couldn’t do you little freak.

    Bwahahahahahahahahaha.

  16. Calduke Says:

I used the term ‘slick rick’ as that is the moniker given to him while he was at Washington

I think that Hasiak’s previous interest was a positive sign for Cal recruiting. Cal was up against a tough competitor in UCLA and Stan still was interested. Here is a quote from the LA Times:
“That the Bruins were able to land both Hasiak and
Su’a-Filo was the direct result of recruiting efforts by Chow, a Hawaii native and former BYU assistant Palcic.
At the start of recruiting Palcic had never been to Hawaii. He has been there 4 times in the month of January. Palcic said ‘As long as I get to go with Norm Chow it’s OK because he gets us in first class. Norm is a big name over there”

    Tough to beat.

I have been a bit negative towards the Cal recruiting
and not JT. Coach Tedford has been a great success.

  17. The Real N8 Bear Says:

GoldenBear77 made one of the best posts on this blog all season.

Cal fans expressing negativity about Tedford, the coaching staff, the recruiting, the players, or anything relating to the team need to be reminded of what Tedford has done for our program. Is he perfect? No, nobody is perfect. Could he have done a better job in some areas? Of course, but again, nobody is perfect.

Now I’m not saying Tedford is allowed to rest on his laurels, but I don’t believe Tedford is that kind of person so I try to remind myself that there is a huge difference between working hard for something and complaining about the efforts of others.

Will Amy ever answer my questions? The Answer? Never! Why? She’s a simpleton with little creativity. Give her a bone, and she bites down. She truly fits the mold of an SC wannabe, “boring and slow, and we’d really wish you’d go!”

LOL! Amy still can’t give a direct answer to my question! Then, she admits she’s reading a board in which she cannot participate. You’re slow and boring, Amy!
