Cal football: Signing Day storylines — wide receivers

One of the aspects of Cal’s recruiting class that deserves examination is that there is only one wide receiver in the group. The Bears were hoping to add a couple others, such as Los Angeles’ Randall Carroll and Tucson’s Adam Hall, but Compton College’s Markish Jones was the only pass-catcher to sign Wednesday.
The Bears brought in four wide receivers in last year’s class, and Jeff Tedford said he was comfortable taking just one receiver this year because he’s confident in the young nucleus that already exists on his roster.
“I feel really good about them,” Tedford said. “(Charles) Satchell, Marvin (Jones) and Michael (Calvin) — all those guys really haven’t stepped on the field yet. They’ve shown that they are great kids and hard workers. I feel like they have a promising future.”
Tedford said Tuesday that Calvin, who suffered a season-ending torn ACL in October during his redshirt freshman season that just never got off the ground, won’t be back in time for spring practice. But there are still high hopes for him. He dazzled on the scout team in 2007 but was slowed all of last year by a sprained toe before ultimately shutting it down after the ACL tear.
Jones earned playing time as a true freshman after a terrific training camp but also suffered a sprained knee. He played sparingly throughout the season. Near the end of the year, when he finally felt completely healthy, he excelled at practice and could really emerge next season.
Satchell was part of Cal’s four-receiver class in 2008 and played on scout team last season. Although starters Nyan Boateng, Verran Tucker and Jeremy Ross all return next year, Satchell should be right there competing for playing time.

how about Ian Albrecht(FR), Alex Lagemann(FR), Alex Stroud(SR), Drew Glover(SR)? I was going through the roaster on calbears.com and I’ve never even heard of these guys, why are they not part of the discussion? The last two maybe done, though God knows what they have been doing but the first two still have a lot of time left.

All 4 are busts. Career scout teamers…

Abe, What’s a roaster? LOL! Glover and Stroud aren’t apart of the discussion for ’09, because they’re going to graduate at the end of the semester. I won’t even touch the other two, but Z-man is wrong. Lagemann is just as much of a bust as Calvin without the hype. So, how does he fall into the category of bust, Z-man?

Abe, that last comment of yours is truly one of the most stupid I’ve seen on boards. First of all, they were talented enough to make the Cal football team. Second of all, any distribution pattern shows that some rise above others, become starters, while the others sink. You can’t play ALL the kids on the roster. That’s not how it works. So, a put down like that for athletes who put in the effort to be on the team is really unnecessary. It’s not like they fumbled a game away, or dropped the winning pass – they simply got beat out for playing time. That doesn’t make them suck. Where’s you athletic support(er)? On your head?
