Cal football (and basketball): Better TV coverage

I attended the annual Comcast SportsNet Bay Area Baseball Luncheon today (I double as a part-time media columnist and was a baseball writer in a former life) and found out some good news for Cal fans. Starting on March 4, Comcast SportsNet Calfornia will be available on channel 89 on basic expanded packages in the Bay Area. That means you no longer will need a digital package to pick up the channel, which holds the local rights to Cal sports. I was also told that if you aren’t able to get channel 89, you can pick up a free converter box from your local Comcast office.

Comcast Sports Net is just pitiful. The quality and quantity of programming is far inferior to FSN. There are significantly fewer games available in HD as compared to FSN.
I am particularly frustrated by calbears.com listing basketball games as being on TV when the game is actually available only on channels from other regions, like Comcast Sports Net California, FSN Northwest.
Who do they think they are fooling? Why doesn’t anyone speak up about this?
(Note to readers: for an extra $5 a month, I get all the regional CSNs and FSNs from my satellite provider.)

I hate Comcast for other reasons as well.

When are they going to start broadcasting the games in HD? There have been so many times that the HD channel is available with no programming – yet still no HD.

So basically if I do not pay the extra $5 per month for the regional channels on directv, I am SOL for the A’s and CAL games that appear on Comcast Net California?
