Basketball: Players eager to peek at alumni game

Point guard Jerome Randle said Thursday he’ll probably only poke his head into Haas Pavilion for a few minutes of tonight’s alumni game. After that, he said, he plans to spend a quiet night before Saturday’s game vs. Stanford. “I think I’m going to just chill out,” he said.

But pressed on which former Cal players he’d like to see, Randle admitted he’d love the chance to interact with two of Cal’s greatest point guards.

“Jason Kidd, if he was going to come,” Randle said. “I know Kevin Johnson’s going to be there. I’d like to speak to him. I’ve never spoken to him before.”

Jamal Boykin said he’s looking forward to watching two guys who played his position — forwards Lamond Murray and Rod Benson.

He also predicted a big night from Stevie Johnson, who played for Cal in the early 1990s, then returned to get his degree.

“Steven Johnson can ball,” said Boykin, who plans to take in the game. “I played with him over the summer and I wouldn’t be surprised if he dunked over a couple people. I’m really looking forward to that.”

Boykin is embraces all that comes with this weekend’s celebration of 100 years of Cal basketball.

“I think it’s great. It’s been a very beautiful year. To see those guys play, that’s going to be fun,” he said. ”I hope it’s a pretty good turnout with the fans. It’s free. I believe a lot of people are going to come out. They should. It’s going to be a really good night.”

Tipoff is 7 p.m., and Boykin is correct — the event is free.
