Cal football: Spring update

By Jonathan Okanes
Tuesday, March 10th, 2009 at 4:29 pm in off-season stuff.

Hey, folks. I have come down with a pretty bad flu so I wasn’t able to attend the spring practice press luncheon today. But I have someone shipping me a transcription of Tedford’s comments, so I will get those up when I can. One thing I did find out is Tracy Slocum has been dismissed from the team by Tedford for violating team rules. More to come…

Jonathan, just wanted to take this time to say I hope you feel better soon. I don’t regularly comment here but I check this blog every day. Thank you for keeping us hungry football fans satisfied during the season as well as the offseason. Go Bears!

  2. joblo Says:

cc times should just fold. nobody covers spring presser for a potential top 10 team that’s 10 minutes away. might as well fold up the sports dept. get well soon jo, then get us some information rather than relaying what you read on the boards. you’re the last guy to know that slocum was out.

  3. Joey Says:

feel free to stop reading the posts if you don’t support the cc times.

  4. Will Says:

ya joblo, if you don’t like JO’s work, then go away. JO’s an actual reporter, so he can’t just report on rumors like people on the boards can. he needs to substantiate the rumors first.

  5. The Football Authority » Jon Okanes verifies that Slocum is off the football team Says:

[...] Jon Okanes verifies that Slocum is off the football team [...]

  6. joblo Says:

nonsense. he reports rumors all the time. he also reads other journalists’s blogs and then says “i’m hearing…” as though he’s got these sources. The guy almost never gets a scoop even though he’s the main reporter covering cal football. and the cc times cares so little that when cal opens spring practice and jt has a press conference, they can’t even send an alternate reporter when the main guy is sick. that’s crummy coverage, whoever is to blame.

  7. Cyrus Says:

seriously Joblo, if even your baseless accusations were true, blame the cctimes, not Okanes for his journalism. Don’t attack the man when his resources are likely being cut thinner on a daily basis.

how are they going to send an alternate reporter when they’ve just laid people off, and they’re on the brink of closure? especially to cover the OFF-SEASON spring practice of a D1 football team? don’t ever manage, you appear to have a horrible sense of allocating resources.

  8. Bear Market Says:

joblo- what’s your problem? if you don’t like this blog then go away. you don’t have to read this one. imho, JO has consistently provided good insight into cal football and bball.

JO- hope you feel better soon.

  9. ho Says:

Joblo – could you be an even bigger prick?

  10. Bear Poop Says:

joblo- wishing others to lose jobs and livelihood is seriously uncool. you’re reading this blog for free so you’re not in a position to demand anything.

  11. Clovis is Cal Country Says:

Okanes outperforms all others assigned to Cal Coverage. Not living in the Bay Area, I find this site the most reliable, accurate, and current. Plus J. Okanes is extremely responsive in replying to e-mail inquiries and questions posted under the comments.

Now, to the topic of Tracy Slocum. As a Clovis Bear, it pains me to see Slocum (Clovis East High) not make it. But the reality is that Cal is very deep at the tailback position, with Best, Vareen, DeBoskie, & Yarnway.

And as a UCB Alum, I am very proud of the program that Coach Tedford is running…………..both on and off the field.

    GO BEARS!

  12. Daniel Says:

I gotta step in and defend JO too. He does consistently good work year round and provides reasonably unbiased coverage as a beat reporter.

Feel better JO, and I think we found a new chant for the board.

    Take off that Jo-blo!

    Take off that Jo-blo!

  13. wehofx Says:

    Great job, JO.

There’s only one other tool the equal of joblow on this board. It’d be great if you both left, never to return.

    Go Bears!

  14. Larry Says:

    joblo = moron?

  15. Pete Carroll Says:

I don’t know anything about reporting but I do know football. I support JO.

  16. bobbear Says:

JO is a pleasure to read. He doesn’t exaggerate or overstate. He’s thoughtful, judicious, and informed. I say we’re lucky to have him writing about Bear football.
