Cal football: Back to basics

Brock Mansion said he and the other quarterbacks spent some time recently watching old film of Jeff Tedford-coached teams. They watched Kyle Boller, Aaron Rodgers and so on. The idea is to get in tune with Tedford’s offense.

“We have a good basis for everything now,” Mansion said. “We’re going back to basics. We’re basically starting from the bottom and working from there to make sure we have a good foundation we can go back to.”

Did they watch Ayoob too? What NOT to do.

  • Mike

    LOL @ Larry

  • Lawrence

I still can’t get that vision of Ayoob throwing that interception to end the Oregon game. Nightmares…

  • southseasbear

Was it an interception? I recall an overthrown pass about ten feet or more over the outstretched arms of a wide open David Gray that would have been a sure fire winning TD.

  • Anonymous

Funny now nobody remembers a pass to DeSean Jackson earlier in the game that Jackson inexplicably jumped for, got hit in the middle by, bobbled and turned into an interception. For all of the horrible throws Joe had (there were certainly more than enough!) the whole team threw away a winnable game that day.

  • cal85

Yes, I recall the overthrow, too. I remember that he had time, too. I was thinking, “breath, plant, dunk the throw.” He also had a wide open passing lane. But hey, I can’t even make a completion in flag football……

Nonetheless, let’s just hope we can figure out the basics of pitch & catch again.

    Go Bears!

  • Big D

I clearly remember that Ayoob play in 2005. I was in Autzen and it was pouring rain the whole game. Cal had many chances to put that game away, then Ayoob overthrew the wide open tight-end, game over. That was one of the worst walks out of a visiting stadium I’ve had (besides USC 2004 & 2006, that’s another story).

  • Teff EdFord (also from Concord)

That game was cold, wet, and wide left, then Ayoob’s cannon shot, and then it got hostile…

  • Lawrence

I just remember thinking that my then six year old son could have hit Gray with that pass. It literally took more effort to miss Gray than to hit him.

  • Cal Ferrari Martin

That pass was about as overthrown(blown) as Ayoob’s hype coming into Cal. Brock and Co. should have Aaron’s 2004 $C game on loop over their lockers.

If only we’d given JJ a shot from the 9….

    Go Bears!

  • Larry

What is Ayoob doing these days? Anyone know? I have a theory. Ayoob = Moron. It makes perfect sense. Lives in parents basement after mental breakdown from poor game play and being booed by fans, now resents Cal and fans. Then again, Ayoob is way too normal/sane to act like that. Only a usc douchbag can be that lame.

    >>>> And Ayboob doesn’t have stalkers either who fabricate stories and have as many s/n’s as the interecptions he threw in the 2005 USC game.

  • AmyFan4Life

Larry, Amy was bashing Cal long before Ayoob came to Cal. Amy was rejected by Cal, her father’s alma mater, even though he donates big money. Since she’s accustomed to get whatever she wants, she needs to vent on here and else where in the past. Else where includes the Scout boards and ESPN affiliates, but those pages don’t tolerate her, as she has been banned. Back to venting, I’m predicting we eventually won’t be see her much as the psycho ward team will recognize this therapy isn’t helping her. She’ll be left to her padded cell, then.

  • Will

Ah yes, you’re still convinced that I’m the same person as AmyFan, GoldenBear, Pete Carroll, Larry, Chuck, Lawrence, your mama, whoever else has ever bothered to talk to you. I mean, I get it, you’re a 400 pounder with no friends. But it’s kind of sad that even YOU can’t believe that more than one person is willing to talk to you (on the internet, no less).

What a shame, Patty Cakes. Just another thing to add to the list of things that you’re wrong about.

Just another thing to add to the list of things that you’re wrong about.>>>>> So here is what I talk about on your blog. 1) Your football program hasn’t been to the Rose Bowl in 50 years and it hasn’t won one in 70; 2)You have never had a Heisman trophy winner; 3) I predicted before both games you would lose to Texas Tech in 2004 by a score of 45-31 and to the Vols in 2006 by 35-17; 4) MeSean destroyed the morale of your team in 2007 while all of you were drinking your Kool Aid; 5) Tedford overcoaches his QBs and gets into their heads too much; 6) You wouldn’t get Hasiak, Adam Hall, or Devon Kennard to sign with you this year; 7) You were headed to the Las Vegas Bowl this year; 8) As much as you want to bash OJ you have your own criminals eg Marriet Ford and Robert Rozier; 9) Jahvid Best won’t win the Heisman unless he puts up big numbers against USC. Putting up over 500 yards against cupcakes like UW and WSU won’t cut it. 10) Any glowing reports about your DL is seriously overblown just like it was in 2006; 11) Z. Follett in addition to cheapshotting Lendale White will never make an inside LB in the NFL like Rey; 12) Finally you will always find a way to choke a big game. That’s why you have never won the Pac 10 championship outright in football or basketball for over 50 years.

In what way was I wrong?

  • BluenGold

Great work, moron/patty- you have summarized the entire reason for your pathetic existence in two paragraphs. Now will you just go away? You keep threatening to do so; how about living up to your word for once?

  • ososdeoro

OK — doesn’t Jeff do checkers with the QBs anymore? Maybe that’s the problem.

Worst throws in Cal history (at least since 1980):

Boller throws it about 5 yards directly to a Stanfurd linebacker, who returns it 40 yards or something for a TD.

Torchio rallies Cal from a 31-17 deficit vs. UCLA to tie the game at 31, and the Bears force a punt. Torch then has the choice of a 20 yard pass to a WIDE OPEN Cal player, or a 10 yard pass to the Bruin whom the Cal receiver had burned, who was between the QB and the WR. TD Bruins.

Didn’t Vedder have a wide open play on 4th down vs. Stanfurd one year and took a sack instead?

Longshore at UCLA in 2007, end o’ the game.

Longshore v. Stanfurd 2007, end o’ the game.

I don’t know why we call these people names or scorn them, though. They played for our team and tried their hardest. We’re all Golden Bears.

Patty, remember, I don’t bother reading your essays on this website. You should have focused on writing essays like that when you were in Davis law school so that you wouldn’t have had to drop out.

BluenGold, patty has a pathetic life. she won’t go away. Just have fun with it. There’s no need to get worked up over her. For her, $C football is her life since she can’t get a real job and dropped out of school. Not to mention she can hardly move since she’s so fat. For the rest of us, we follow sports for fun because we have school, jobs, family, friends. She’s got none of those (although she has that great patty caker job now!)
