The Golden Bears were Pac 10 champs in 2006.

I think you can still be proud of your team, excited by their ability to compete, AND be disappointed by not getting to the Rose Bowl. This isn’t an all or nothing prospect. I don’t know many coaches that truly believe in the edict of “winning is the only thing.” Except Nick Saban of course. But do you really want that kind of person mentoring your fellow alumni? I don’t.

I support Coach Tedford and I have been much happier with the Bears since Jeff Tedford’s arrival. That said, I am disappointed that they have yet to win the Pac-10 and take a trip to the Rose Bowl. I’m sorry 66, but anything short of winning the Pac-10 will always be a disappointing.

Dear Dball:
How do we experience the joy of victory if we do not also experience the agony of defeat? I was in the Coliseum in 2004, and the Bears were clearly the best team on the field that day, yet ended up on to short side of the score (the reasons for which I will spare you, but the loss was due to both ill fortune and the criminal act of a USC player). Should I have howled against Coach Tedford and the team because we lost or been thankful for having the opportunity to have witnessed such a great contest and applauded their great effort? I chose the latter course then and will continue to support Coach Tedford and the team in the seasons ahead, win or lose. Go Bears!

I think we all have different perspectives and expectations based on the era in which we became Bear fans. They’re just different, though the one thing in common is that it feels good to win and feels bad to lose. So here’s a salute to a great season ahead!

Dear Larry:
I enjoy reading the posts as well as JO’s reports, and I think that this site has many excellent contributors. However, the negative fecal matter that some people dumped on Tedford and the team during the last couple of seasons when they ran into problems was really disgusting and no doubt discouraged the Bears when they needed encouragement from the fans. Unfortunately, my comments will not likely discourage these narcissists, so I apologize to you for my whining. Go Bears!

Thanks again, JO, for all of your excellent reporting and analysis. As an aging alum from an era when a winning season made Bear fans euphoric, it has been a great joy rooting for the Bears during the Tedford era (notwithstanding the recent appearance of whining “fans”–some of whom occasionally “contribute” to this blog–who like to scream like little girls if the Bears have the temerity not to win the national championship to entertain these armchair narcissists). It’s wonderful keeping up with the Bears on your site. Keep up the good work, JO. Your talent and hard work show in each of your reports
