Will: If you look at the roster and see who’s going to be there in 2010, you’ll count/see that Cal actually has a number of openings for 2010, and only 1 has been filled (Allen Crabbe). I’ll give him a pass on the 2009 class since he just got here, but he cannot have a mediocre 2010 class! He should have 3 more slots to fill (2009 graduates include Theo, Randle, Boykin, Christopher), so wait and see what he gets. My concern is that many top players and teams have already hooked up for 2010. So, the available pool has shrunk and I haven’t been seeing Cal’s name connected with many top players. Chances of getting some studs shrinks the more time goes by. Monty is not going to coach Cal for 20 years. Maybe 10 years? Kids who are juniors in high school now are not going to be seniors for 5 more years, so in a sense, Monty doesn’t have that many more recruiting classes in his lifespan. The time is now. He’s a mature coach and has to hit the recruiting game running, JUST like he successfully hit the coaching (x’s and o’s) game this past fall.

It’s hard to recruit when you have few, if any, open scholarships available. The year after this one will definitely be a rebuilding year, but I think he’ll stock up some good players.

Monty will get a free pass this year on recruiting, due to being new, and the fact that this is a veteran team. But after the seniors graduate, the cupboard will be bear, and people will start to wonder what happened to their supposed savior.
He hasn’t done the recruiting job, and it puts the program in a precarious position heading into the 2010-11 season.

What an odd recruit report. 1st off they say that Cal’s class is four signees (instead of three) Then the narrative doesn’t seem to match the grade.
