Cal football: Forbes extra

Some of you may have seen my story today on Nick Forbes. I realize he committed last weekend, but our shrinking news space put the story on hold for several days. Anyway, here is more from my conversation with Forbes.

On choosing Cal: “One of the main reasons i chose Cal was because of the family atmostphere, not just with football but with the school and the professors. I talked to some of the professors and they seem to really care about the students. They stay late and help out and stuff like that.”

Expanding on the family atmosphere aspect of the football program: “They’re just really good people. AFter I committed, I thought maybe they wouldn’t show as much attention toward me, but there was no difference how they treated me before and after. It just seems like they are good, honest people. They didn’t pressure me during the recruiting process or throw a million facts at me. They are just genuine people that don’t seem like they are really working to make Cal out to be something that it’s not.”

On moving so far away from home (Frederick, MD): “Football is so demanding you don’t have a chance to go home every weekend anyway. It’s not really a factor. I never thought i would be completely satisfied with whatever choice I made. I thought I would still kind of think about going somewhere else. But about the only negative thing about Cal is that it’s far away, and that doesn’t matter to me at all. I joke around with my mom that it’s the worst positive about it.”

Good to hear Tedford is branching out in terms of his recruiting reach. Has he talked about this at all?

  • Jan K Oski

Tedford and everyone else can’t talk about recruits until after they sign on the dotted line.

  • Former DC guy

I wonder if scheduling the Maryland game gave Cal added exposure such that this player paid more attention to who Cal is.

Man, this guy is exactly the type of person we want at Cal. I heard he’s got a 3.6 GPA and is thinking about entering the Engineering program. I like his emphasis on sincerity and genuineness, and his attitude in general.
I wasn’t on the football team, but I definitely agree with him that Cal as a school has a real sense of family and connectedness. It’s the one school I can think of where so many different types of people walk under one banner, and have tolerance and care for each other.
I still call Berkeley home even after having left 3 years ago, and even though I didn’t grow up in the area.

I’ve read many articles about the various recruits and the recruits talk about their contacts and conversations with the coaches and head coaches.
What is the limitation on ‘contacting’ recruits before they sign the LOI.
