Basketball: Up close and personal to The Dunk

I haven’t seen The Dunk.

And neither have you.

Nike officials made sure Jordan’s Crawford’s two-handed flush over LeBron James at the NBA superstar’s skills camp on Monday night didn’t find its way onto YouTube by confiscating the only two known videos of the play.

Unless it magically reappears on a Nike commercial next fall – and I wouldn’t bet against it — we’ll likely never see what may be the most famous dunk ever to take place in the month of July.

But Patrick Christopher saw it.

The Cal senior was Crawford’s teammate and on the floor Monday night in the pickup game at LeBron’s camp. And Christopher is convinced the mystery surrounding the play has added to its myth.

“It’s definitely making it bigger,” Christopher said. “Because nobody has seen it, it’s up to you to use your imagination as to how magnificent it was.

“I’m getting text message after text message about it. I’ve had people call me from Vegas, New York, everywhere. I’m like, are you guys serious?”

Christopher, who has worked James’ skills camp for the past three summers, said the dunk itself was great but just short of legendary. The play came out of nowhere, he said.

“Oh man, it was a nice dunk. He made a nice dribble drive down the middle of the lane,” Christopher recalled.  “To me, it looked like LeBron jumped to try to block what he thought would be a layup. I don’t think LeBron jumped to his highest point. I think he caught him napping.

“I’m not going to try to belittle anyone’s dunk or anyone’s highlight. The biggest deal is you have one of the greatest players of our era, and any highlight against him is going to be a great play.

“As far as it being the greatest dunk of all time, that’s not for me to judge.”

Christopher said he didn’t know until later that a Nike official took the video evidence.

“I guess they’re making a big deal about it,” he said. “LeBron posters people almost nightly. To me, I just don’t understand (the reaction).”
