Cal sophomore Max Zhang and his Chinese teammates finished the World University Games by posting victories over the United Arab Emirates and South Africa, bringing their final record to 2-4.
Zhang wound up leading the tournament in rebounding (17.3) and blocked shots (5.6) and was seventh in scoring (18.0) after a 17-point, 17-rebound performance (in just 20 minutes) vs. UAE, followed by a 21-point, 22-rebound effort vs. South Africa.
Until we see evidence to the contrary in a collegiate setting, we’ll hold off suggesting these performances will translate immediately into something substantial for the Bears. But clearly this was a huge experience for Max, who should gain confidence and motivation as he returns to Berkeley.

It was all due to the ESPN gameday “HeadMax” sign.
