By Jonathan Okanes
Wednesday, July 15th, 2009 at 9:48 am in off-season stuff.

It hasn’t been the best week for former Cal football players.

–Former Cal wide receiver Noah Smith was sentenced to four years in prison for rape.

–Former offensive lineman Reed Diehl also is facing some hard time.

    -Daily Trojan writes:
Mark Sanchez, the USC football team’s 19-year-old backup quarterback, was arrested and booked for sexual assault at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Cardinal Gardens Apartments, said a Los Angeles Police Department Media Relations spokesman.

A female USC student alleged that Sanchez sexually assaulted her around 12:30 a.m. that day, the spokesman said.

The LAPD investigation is still in its preliminary stages.

“We’re just learning about this,” football coach Pete Carroll wrote in an e-mail sent to USC’s sports information department.

“We’ll cooperate fully and do whatever we can to assist,” Carroll wrote. “At this point, this is being handled by the University’s Student Affairs office, and we’ll follow along with whatever action the university takes.”

Student Affairs also responded to the allegations against Sanchez.

“We are waiting for the LAPD to provide us with a report,” Michael L. Jackson, vice president of Student Affairs, wrote in an e-mail. “We will of course cooperate fully with the investigation of this matter.”

Or how about this lovely nugget from USC linebacker Rey Maualuga was arrested early Tuesday morning and booked on suspicion of misdemeanor battery after allegedly punching a man during a party near campus, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman said.

From the editors of this site, who ironically, were both punched in the face by a leather glove-wearing Marcell Allmond (former USC cornerback) back in 2000 — Rey, please — your aggression is best left on the field. It’s way more fun when you’re hitting our opponents, not our students.
