Football: Cleaning up

You may have noticed that some comments have been deleted in recent days. We’ve been pretty open about comments in the past, but for now on we are going to be a little more discerning. All comments that are personal attacks, use profanity, or are otherwise inappropriate won’t be tolerated anymore. Criticism is still fine, but keep it to football. Thanks, everyone.

Jonathan Okanes

Jonathan Okanes is in his fourth year covering Cal's football team. Previously, he covered Cal's men's basketball team for four years. He can also be followed on Twitter at twitter.com/OkanesonCal.

    No, thank YOU Jonathan

  • AMYthicalprogram

    Make that two!

  • BluenGold

The most expeditious way to stop the ‘inappropriate’ posts would be to ban moronsarecoming and its various and sundry aliases from this blog. This is, after all the poster who calls JO ‘clueless’ because it disagrees with his Pac-10 ranking predictions and the quality of his writing in general. It seems a bit odd to delete those posts which go after the troll, but not those posts of the troll itself.

I’m very glad to hear this and hope it is true. The comment section on this site long ago lost any interest for me because it was always just a petty juvenile back and forth between whoever was for and against Cal or USC. As a Cal fan, I come here for Cal football news and would like the comments to be substantial in nature. If Jonathan or some other watchdog can effectively discourage that useless banter then maybe more thoughtful discussion will resume. Go Bears!

Outstanding move. Your informative and professional blogs should not be diminished by immature ramblings of irresponsible responders.

  • milo

Nice. I think you’ll find more comments without the trolls and riff-raff. Thanks.

  • MoreNCsarecoming

I am all smiles about this. Now maybe some real football material can be spoken for.

  • Clovis is Cal Country

Good first step. Now take the next step and ban ISD access and posts from obvious trolls who post purposefully inflammatory remarks under the guise that they’re football related.

  • Stats Guy

Thank you J.O. I wonder if MoreNCsarecoming will have anything left to say when you take the Stanford-based derogatory Cal comments.

  • Jan K Oski

All right! Now, we Bear fans can reply about football, again! Thanks, JO!

    Go BEARS!

  • calbear

Some Cal Players in the NFL have made some recent cameos on the NFL video content. Look for DeSean Jackson and Marshawn Lynch! Anyone else getting ready for the season to start?

By the way, http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/pgStory?contentId=8541436#sport=COLLEGE%20FOOTBALL&photo=8539980, guess who makes number 5…

  • wehofx

Great news! As someone who was occasionally guilty of feeding the troll, I far prefer having no troll posts on this board.

Great links. I think Z Follet, after paying his dues on Special Teams, has a real chance on getting into the LB rotation. Here’s hoping the Pain Train sticks in the League for more than a few years.

Reading Coach Gregory’s interview has me really jacked for Coach T’s appearance here. Keep up the good work, JO.

  • milo

    A note to JO:

If your tech guys can add an “ignore” button/function, that would be great. It’s a way for users to leap frog a troll until he/she/it is ID’ed or put away while keeping a conversation moving. A form of self-regulation.

Enough can’t be said about how persistent trolls and juvenile posters can kill a blog.

  • covinared

I doubt Follet will last very long. He was a one dimensional player at Cal that unloaded on those looking the other way, and dived at the ankles of those running toward him. Special teams players have to tackle guys running their way. Cal has produced many more fundamentally sound, albeit less flamboyant, linebackers over the years. I doubt he’ll be missed much, and am optimistic about our lb group this year.

  • iamalcindor

Okanes, does it mean that you are also going to do your research before you post non-sense (UW at #9 and pucla in top-6)

  • MoreNCsarecoming

I think he was the guy who head butted Lendale White when his helmet was off.

  • iamalcindor

JO, now lets go back to your pre-season poll. I am curious who is #1 – SUC or Oregon?

  • Big D

Thanks J.O. I hope the trolling slows or ends here. I mainly read your stuff up top and skip the comments now due to the annoying troll who seems to be on here more than anybody else. Which is sad in itself.

    GO BEARS!!!
