Football: Riley on O’Brien list

The Watch List for the 2009 Davey O’Brien Award was released yesterday and Cal quarterback Kevin Riley was one of the 33 names to make the preseason cut. The list is just a preseason prognostication and names can be added and dropped later. The award is given to the nation’s top quarterback annually.
Looks like Riley better win the starting job now, or the the folks at the O’Brien Award might look a little silly.

JO – you’re bordering between skepticism and derision. KR is better than you’re giving him credit. At the very least you can say he hasn’t nearly lived up to his potential. Most fans would agree with that. I also believe he merits to be on the DOB watch list because, frankly, he is a very capable quarterback.

Pete, there was no value judgement taken there whatsoever. I was merely pointing out that Tedford maintains that the quarterback spot is still open, so theoretically there could be a player on the Watch List that doesn’t even start for his own team. That being said, I have said many times that I believe Riley will be named the starter.

Thanks for all, JO. Can you urge Tepper to maintain his blog daily? I just love it. Thanks.

Ok, I know this article is from the ‘other’ newpaper, but I thought it was an interesting and informative interview with Coach Tedford:

P.S. I could have included the comment posted to it by moron the troll, aka ’9dwarfs’ and my opinions concerning same, but that would have likely been deleted by the CCTimes. Suffice to say, almost all the other comment posters there dissed it as well.

JO – have you heard word on the streets about the summer workouts? I know I’m not the only one prayer for a better passing game this year. Everyone seems to be saying the right things, but do you hear that this is really the case? Are we just better than last year (not much of a victory), looking at Justin Vedder to Bobby Shaw, or can we move up to Dave Barr to Uwaezuoke?

Riley is capable of anything. BTW ’85: In my day, it was Rich Campbell to Matt Bouza.

and Joe Rose, Holden Smith and Floyd Eddings. All NFL players.

Covinared, I used those names as references as to what we can hopefully expect. I would be thrilled to get to that level of QB & WR. I’d even be happy with Gale Gilbert to Merrit Ford, David Lewis & Wes Howell from my days.

Cal85, I have attended a couple of summer workouts and the receivers didn’t strike me as being that much more explosive or improved. But that’s a small sample size. We’re going to find out much more about them when training camp opens in a couple of days.
