Football: Training camp issues — who is on guard?

The Bears appear to be set at center (Chris Guarnero) and tackles (Mike Tepper on the left and Mitchell Schwartz on the right). The uncertainty on the offensive line is at guard, where former right guard Noris Malele has departed and returning starter Mark Boskovich could be hearing footsteps on the left side.

On the right side, Cal appears satisfied plugging in Chet Teofilo, who started last season at right tackle before going down with a season-ending ankle injury. Boskovich took over the starting job last season only after Guarnero was lost because of a toe injury. He played well at times, but struggled at others. Highly regarded prospect Matt Summers-Gavin will push Boskovich for the job in the fall.

Others in the mix for playing time are Donovan Edwards and Justin Cheadle, each of whom got starts last season because of injury. Edwards played tackle last year but the Bears would like to see him at guard as well. Richard Fisher, who has taken first team reps on and off during the past couple of years, also is someon the coaching staff can depend on.

Mark my words. There will be a definite relationship with the way this program collapses and the number of OL personnel who will not make it through the year. At USC we have the best OL we have had in recent memory and it is very deep.

    Moronsarecoming-

As usual, it is veeery deep!

Now I don’t need to spend money on a psychic. I can rest assured that our program will collapse and the trojan line will be deep.

There is no question that the biggest concern for Cal this year is the two lines, offense and defense. Riley is a gutsy and talented QB and he will shine this year. LBs should be fine. To me the worry is in the trenches. Our starting DL crew is awesome, but here is the problem: there is absolutely no depth. The exact same problem persists for the OL. We have a fairly veteran crew but once again no depth and if we have the same injury situation this year like last year then it will be tragic. b/c no matter how improved Riley is going to be if there is not pass protection then there will be no consistent passing offense and its 2008 all over again. One more thing depth at the DL is not an issue only in injury situation but also for regular rotation. DLmen general tend to get fatigued quickly, specially when they are consistently taking double teams, like in a 3-4 scheme so if we have close games going into 4th quaters pray we will have good offense to keep us in the game.

No need to be a psychic. It’s called progressive revelation.

My response to Morons wasn’t in regard to how “very deep” the U$C offensive line was. I was referring to another entity altogether and forgot to warn him to roll up his pants legs in case he stepped into it.

    Abe,

The previous line coaches (See food eater and Raider nation guy) are notorious for their recruiting, and not in a positive way. It’s not a surprise that the depth isn’t good, and while they did bring in some quality players over the years, they had too many misses to build competent depth.

I’m confident the 2 new coaches will fix that.
