I talked briefly with defensive coordinator Bob Gregory after practice Friday night. Much of our talk was about the linebackers, which makes sense because that will be the most competitive position during camp. Gregory acknowledged the weakside outside spot is the most open, as a few candidates vie to replace Zack Follett at that position.
Devin Bishop begins camp as the starter at that spot, and Gregory thought he looked good Friday night. JC transfer Ryan Davis could be Bishop’s biggest competition. Fellow JC transfers Jarred Price and Jerome Meadows will see time both inside and outside, but Gregory said Davis will play exclusively on the outside.
Gregory said if the season started right now, Mychal Kendricks and Mike Mohamed would start inside with Eddie Young and Bishop on the outside. But he also said there will be healthy competition for playing time, with guys like D.J. Holt pushing the starters. Gregory said he’s also looking forward to seeing Charles Johnson, who missed spring practice with a shoulder injury.
