Football: Smith out for season

Cal coach Jeff Tedford said today that tight end Tad Smith is out for the season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee. Smith suffered the injury during last night’s scrimmage.

Since Smith is a fifth-year senior, it appears his college career is over, unless he petitions the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility.

Tedford said Anthony Miller will start the season as the starting tight end.

very dissapointing news JO, Tad showed great promise in making the switch from DE, hopefully he can pull off a 6th year.

Looks like you needed Stanford’s recruiting class of TEs. What goes around comes around.

This just shows how important it is to get that degree. An injury could end anyone’s football career, but a Cal degree insures multiple backup plans. You’ll be missed this year, Tad. Good luck in those other pursuits!

    Go BEARS!

Never like to see season (career) ending injuries, but it is part of the game. Thanks for your hard work, Tad. If there is a silver lining it is that it is at a position where we are deep.

Good luck to Tad. Fortunately, it sounds like Skyler Curran, Anthony Miller and Jarret Sparks have had great camps. Hopefully, Spencer Ladner recovers from his injury quickly to give us even more depth at the position.
