Football: Saturday quick hitters
By Jonathan Okanes
Saturday, August 29th, 2009 at 3:41 pm in Mid-week.
I’ll have a more thorough recap later, but wanted to throw out there a couple of tidbits because Cal released a depth chart for the season-opener.
–Marvin Jones and Verran Tucker will start at wide receiver. Jeff Tedford confirmed it after practice. He’s been very happy with Tucker’s work this fall, especially in the latter half of camp. He acknoweldeged that the team still will use many three-receiver sets, and said that third receiver could be a numberĀ of guys — Nyan Boateng and Jeremy Ross, among others.
–Although the depth chart lists Giorgio Tavecchio as kicker, Tedford said it still hadn’t been decided. The team simply wanted to release a depth chart, and as of now, Tavecchio is the starter. But Tedford warned that doesn’t it couldn’t change sometime during the week.
–It appears the linebackers are going to stay the way they have been since the scrimmage — Mike Mohamed and Eddie Young on the outside and Mychal Kendricks and D.J. Holt on the inside. Jerome Meadows is listed as Holt’s backup. Meadows must be doing some good work since we have been banned from watching most of practice, because he wasn’t getting as many reps earlier in camp.
–I may have mentioned this before, but the team has been experimenting with defensive end Keith Browner as a rush linebacker. Well, he’s now listed as Mohamed’s backup, so it appears he’s there to stay.
I will list the complete depth chart later tonight, along with more from today.

Thanks for the early report JO!!!
If possible it would be great to hear from the coaches on Browner, Meadows, Price, and Little.

How about Davis, Aigamaua and Hurrell? Are any of them ready to contribute to the D this year?
Cal DL and LB’s biggest job this year will be stopping the run. I hope these guys are ready to absolutely shut down the running game.
Go Bears

You missed Conte at CB or Safety. What happened to Hurrell and Little?
Also, I don’t see Mohamed as a rush OLB. He is not all speed and power. He is a “nose for the ball” type run defender and a great pass defender. That defines the “Will” ILB. I don’t understand the switch to the outside. I guess that’s why I’m not coaching D1 football.

J.O. I was just wondering how the J.C. transfers fit into J.T.’s plans.

Jeth, This was the depth chart from MoragaBear at BearInsider.com. Conte has fallen off the 2 deep, but he’ll get a lot of chances in situational, especially, nickel formations. This shows how much depth that the Bears have at DB.

Jan, the depth chart will be made officially public today (Monday).
Rocko, as of now it appears Jerome Meadows is the most likely candidate to play some right away. Jarred Price appeared to be getting significant reps before the media ban went into effect, so that apparently has changed.
