Football: Cal up to No. 10

The latest Associated Press top 25 was released this morning and Cal has moved up two spots to No. 10. USC (No. 3) and Cal are the only two Pac-10 teams ranked, although Oregon State is 26th. Oregon dropped out of the poll after its loss to Boise State.

#10 in coaches, too, and oregon state made it into that one. arizona gets mention, too, and oregon could climb back with a couple wins. go bears (and pac10!)

  • Mike

Someone please explain to me how Vegas odds has Cal’s next game vs Eastern Washington as “Even”. What gives??

  • rollonubears

i don’t know, but if you’ve got an account, i suggest you jump all over that!

With the Bears in the top ten in the second week of September, the Bears should finally be in control of their own destiny. If the Bears keep winning, it should be impossible for all of the biased pollsters to dis or ignore them. (Although I suppose I shouldn’t underestimate the media’s shameless willingness to return to their script and ignore reality–I already heard one ESPN commentator apologizing for Oklahoma’s loss and essentially stating that because of Bradford’s injury, if Oklahoma can start winning, they will be presumed at the end of the season to be a better team that BYU, notwithstanding having been defeated by them.) Go Bears!

What is the deal with Mississippi? Are they really that good that jump all the way to #6?

  • BluenGold

I have to admit I was anxious this morning (after a long weekend of football) to see the new poll rankings. But seems to me that this time of year they mean very little, due to so many OOC games against mismatched opponents ( a certain vocational school in south central LA comes to mind). I think the polls do not become meaningful until the top ranked teams are in the middle of their conference schedules.

  • Davidson

What is meaningful is that Miller, McShay and Maisel have us at #6. Pat Ford has us #4!

This means that we are on the radar. If we keep winning, there is no reason to ignore us. Plus, we get more coverage.

There’s nothing you can do individually to lose or win the game (that’s up to the kids and the coaching staff)…so why not just enjoy it while it’s happening?

    Oh yea, that’s right, we’re Cal fans…more hand-wringing and worryness incoming…

  • Rocko

Mike are you sure it was not NL,(No Line). Vegas normally doesn’t put point spreads nor take bets on games between FBS & FCS schools.

No Mississippi doesn’t deserve a Top 10 ranking. They poured it on Memphis in the fourth quarter and scored a meaningless TD in the last minute when they should have taken a knee. We could have scored another three tochdowns on Maryland if we left our starters in the 4th quarter.

  • Jan K Oski

+1 Davidson. Let’s enjoy the ride! This team has the chemistry, athleticism and coaching to take it to the next level. We fans have nothing to do with any of those elements, or even a significant contribution other than yelling like mad men at the games. Good job on that, Bear fans. Maryland knows this is BEAR TERRITORY!

    Go BEARS!

  • ToparchiBear

Jan, you are right on. JT said it over and over again that we, cal fan, had made the strawberry canyon a difficult place for any opponent to play. And, I hope that Oct. 3 will be the day, a record breaking decibel be heard there. Make it difficult for the troll to stroll.

    Go Bears!

  • McLOVIN

Be careful what you wish for. The higher Cal is ranked, the more painful it will be when they lose. Especially if that is on Oct. 3.
