With the amount of media that descended on Memorial Stadium tonight, you’d think the Bears were the eighth-ranked team in the nation or something.
Actually, Wednesdays should bring out the most press all season, because Wednesday is the only day each week that Jahvid Best is available to the media. It’s no coincidence a couple of local TV stations showed up tonight, as well as the usual group of print media.
Not a whole lot new to ask or report about with regard to Best tonight. For a transcript of his comments, click here.
The only significant nugget out of practice today was that fullback Brian Holley sat out once again. Jeff Tedford said Tuesday he expected Holley to return today, but apparently he hasn’t been cleared from all the effects of the concussion he suffered Saturday. Tedford said he expects Holley back Thursday, and expects him to be ready to play Saturday. However, he didn’t say these things with a great deal of conviction.
If for some reason Holley can’t come back this week, the Bears could be very thin at fullback. Backup Will Kapp tweaked an ankle at practice Tuesday and sat out today. But Tedford said it was just a precaution to make sure Kapp is available Saturday.
There has been much talk about Cal’s inability to win on the road. Tedford has been very happy with the team’s focus so far in practice this week.
“They’ve been focused for the first two games so far, and I sense a real strong focus for this game,” he said. “It has not been an issue whatsoever. I’ve seen a lot of great work out here, a lot of focus on detail, a lot of focus on what needs to get done.”
Tedford said playing a Big Ten opponent on national television is good for the program.
“To play a good team from one of the top conferences in the country in a hostile environment is going to be a great experience for us,” Tedford said. “Anytime you can get the exposure of watching our team play, I think it’s an advantage.”
Cal will hold an earlier-than-usual practice than usual Thursday, beginning just after lunchtime. After practice, they will immediately bus to the airport to fly to Minneapolis.
