Basketball: Jorge impressed by Cal newcomers

I talked late last week with sophomore guard Jorge Gutierrez, who had the chance to visit his family in Mexico this summer for the first time in a year-and-a-half.

We touched on several subjects, including his impressions of Cal’s three newcomers. Here’s some of what he had to say:

— On freshman point guard Brandon Smith: “He’s good. He’s pretty smart, he’s strong. I think he can help us.”

— Does that mean Smith may become Jerome Randle’s chief backup, allowing Gutierrez to move more to the wing?   “No clue,” he said. “It’s a coach’s decision. I just want to play.”

— On freshman forward Bak Bak: `He’s very skilled. He just needs to get a little bit of weight, get stronger. He’ll be fine.”

— On JC transfer Markhuri Sanders-Frison, who is trying to drop weight while competing for a starting job at the post: “He’s still good. I think he plays like Harper. He understand the game. Plays hard all the time, plays defense. He does the little things.”

Cal’s coaches are hopeful that Max Zhang can have some impact this season. Montgomery told me recently that although the competition level Max faced at the World University Games wasn’t always high, he is encouraged by the confidence Max gained and the numbers he put up. If the Bears can get 10 productive minutes per game from Zhang — meaning mostly he is a factor defensively and as a rebounder — I’m guessing they will be happy. His upside remains intriguing, but Max needs more strength and still needs to catch up to the speed of the game at this level.

Exactly right, if Max can move a little faster and get a little stronger and tougher he can make an impact.
    Any news from Harper Kamp?
    Hope the guy is healthy.

Thanks for the tidbits. Would love to read some more in depth stories on the team. How has Seeley developed since last year?
