The Bears seemed in good spirits as they wrapped up practice Thursday. Cal appears to have done a good job putting Oregon in the past and getting excited about USC. They were hooting and hollering as they stretched and met on the field afterward.
Matt Summers-Gavin will not play Saturday. His sprained shoulder isn’t ready. So Mark Boskovich, who started 10 games last season, will take his place. This will be something important to watch, especially in light of the O-line’s struggles last Saturday.
Jeff Tedford talked a little tonight about USC’s linebacking corps, a brand new threesome that replaced highly regarded Rey Maualuga, Brian Cushing and Kaluka Malava, each of whom went during the first four rounds of the NFL Draft. While this year’s group of Chris Galippo, Michael Morgan and Malcom Smith are inexperienced, they were each prep All-Americans and seem to be doing just fine as replacements. The Trojans rank in the top 10 nationally in both scoring defense and total defense.
“They’re all athletic and have a good feel for the game,” Tedford said. “These guys have played (as backups). It’s not like they are brand new. It looks like they have a pretty good handle on what they do. They’re pretty disciplined and do a good job.”
Not too much else to report from Thursday. Counting Crows lead singer Adam Duritz has been at practice the past couple of days.
