Football: Wednesday night update

Enough sun came out Wednesday to make the field at Memorial Stadium playable for practice. In fact, it was in surprisingly good shape considering how battered it looked yesterday afternoon. Cal held a full practice before Thursday’s slightly shorter practice that will end with the players boarding their busses for Pasadena.
The good news for the Bears on Wednesday is they suddenly got much healthier. Wide receivers Nyan Boateng and Verran Tucker and left guard Matt Summers-Gavin each practiced in full capacity. Coach Jeff Tedford said barring any setbacks overnight, it appears all three players are on pace to play Saturday at UCLA.
Tedford had previously said Boateng and Summers-Gavin were on pace to play, but Tucker had seemed a bit more iffy. He saw a doctor Sunday night to check out his deep calf bruise and was day-to-day, but appeared to have made pretty good strides.
A couple of observations from practice:
–Beau Sweeney took the second team reps I saw at the beginning and end of practice and appears to be in line to be the backup quarterback for the third straight game.
–Linebacker D.J. Holt is taking some reps at outside linebacker. He got some more reps there last week while Mychal Kendricks rested a shoulder injury, but defensive coordinator Bob Gregory said expect Holt to see more playing time on the outside in the future.
–Josh Hill continues to get the first team reps opposite Syd’Quan Thompson at cornerback.
–Vince D’Amato drilled a 42-yard field goal at the end of a two-minute drill near the end of practice. It came at the end of a drive by the second team.
There wasn’t too much else in the way of news Wednesday. After practice, the Bears were paid a visit by Dr. Harry Edwards, the sports sociologist who has worked with many teams on the pro and college level. Edwards has given talks to the team a handful of times over the years about topics such as diversity and team chemistry.

So the Vick sympathizer gave the team a pep talk? Nice.

Oh my god, so the well-respected Dr. Harry Edwards, who has encouraged people to give Michael Vick a second chance, gave the Bears a pep talk?!? Jeez. Go Bears!

So…they had to settle for a field goal at the end of that two-minute drill?! They were unable to drive in a TD against the second team?!
Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad D’Amato made through the uprights, but c’mon, get a touchdown!!

It was the second team offense, not defense.

Wow, someone encouraged people to give a “horrible” guy like Vick a second chance. What an abominable, detestable human being Harry is.

Regarding Will’s comment:
“Wow, someone encouraged people to give a “horrible” guy like Vick a second chance. What an abominable, detestable human being Harry is.”
I don’t know the full story of Dr. Edwards support of Vick, however, I do respect Dr. Edwards’ opinions and thoughts. I don’t always agree and probably don’t in this case. Still, this does NOT make him “detestable”.
I thought this blog was followed by Cal alumni; ones that valued diversity of thought and perspective.
Go Bears!

I think Will II was being sarcastic (that wasn’t me, my snarky comments are usually only directed towards particular $C fans who can’t spell)…

Did the Bears try running on grass this week??

Dr. Harry Edwards is a good man and Cal is lucky to have him as a resource.
Hope his talk will help improve this team and get them back on the winning track.
