    Wow…

    USC 34
    ND 27

A little child shall lead them. What a performance with over 379 yards passing.

Not only has Jahvid Best lost all talk of a Heisman candidate, but if I were NFL scouts, I’d be moving him down my list of RB’s rapidly. Once again, he goes backwards too much, too slow to hit the hole.
Final stats show 18 rushes for 102 yards. So, take away the long 93 yard run, and he had 17 carries for 9 yards. Are you serious?

Is it that teams see him in the backfield and stack their D?
Can’t be when Vereen gains 154 yards on 17 carries. There’s got to be something to the way Jahvid’s first 4 steps go. Once he gets past the line, we all know he’s electric. But too often he can’t even get to the line.

These stats are the same as the 2nd half against Minnesota for Best.
I have a complete lack of understanding what the issue is. Someone, please illuminate!

best has been coached to “wait for the hole to develop” no matter what. it’s gotten in his head to an extreme, and it’s the source of his problems. that hesitation can pay off big time, like it did once, today, but not every time. it’s a better strategy to get at least a few yards on every play, and if you’ve got any kind of opening at all, take it immediately. he’s also hurt, and tedford’s trying to hide it, so he keeps his draft stock up. best is not a power back. he doesn’t even block for his qb. he’s really fast, and pretty quick. i think vareen’s a better back overall, but if people want to think best is worth focusing on, more power to them.

We won for the first time in years at UCLA. Why so unhappy?

Best had a 93 yard TD run, Vereen had a 42 yard TD run and Riley threw 3 TD passes, all over 40 yards I think. Jones’ catch in the end zone was beautiful.

Tedford started to get two monkeys off his back: he won on the road and he won in LA. Overall, it was a pretty good performance by the Bears.

  5. GoldenBear 77 Says:

Notice that Tedford did not play Best in the first series or two of the second half. Those of you looking for adjustments found one. He was not hurt. UCLA used a completely different defense when Best was in the game, and Tedford took advantage of it by using Vareen, and DeBoskie. That is power. If, as a running back, you can command a completely different approach, just because you are in the game, you are great (anyone remember how teams moved three infielders to the right side when Reggie Jackson was in his prime?). He had good statistics today (don’t forget the 51 yard touchdown reception), but his value was higher than his production. (Did you notice, also, that Kevin Riley ended up being the lead blocker on the 90+ yard touchdown run?)

I have no idea what Moren is trying to say thanks to the wonders worked by greasemonkey, but I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that it includes the phrase “the fix was in” along with his other recycled comments after a Cal win. And his post most certainly does not include any mention of the boneheaded plays on the last drive by the Toejams that almost handed the game to Notre Dame.

Overall, good win for the Bears and it was nice to see the Riley-Jones combo light it up. That kind of success against a pretty decent defense is encouraging for the future.

I must admit I missed most of this game. Life. Did Riley have passing success as a result of the D coming up to stop Best? If that was the case, why not leave Best in the whole time and just pass on UCLA all day long – why the need to bring Vereen in?

  8. kyle Says:

Hey uh oh Vereen had 154 yrds rushing that’s why you bring Vereen in. Best also went for over 100.

  9. Eric Says:

Was at the game. The team that made the fewest mistakes won. Our run defense was strong, and, while Prince generally passed well, we got big plays when we needed them, particularly in the second half (the delayed blitz in the third quarter was awesome).

The entire defense keyed on Best. When Vereen was in, they backed off (compare the pitch play to Vereen with the one to Best). Riley made them pay, either with intelligent throws or with his legs (where has that been the last two games?).

The comments on Best – while he does look a little slower (man, was it hot at the Rose Bowl, and I was in one of the boxes, so maybe the heat was an issue for Best in the second half), Best has no shot to do anything if he facing a defender as soon as he gets the ball. It isn’t him so much waiting for the hole to develop (though I agree he does do that). Others have commented on having a Best/Vereen backfield – I like that idea. Both can run, both can catch.

  10. Pug Says:

On Jahvid Best’s 93-yard TD run I noticed one of the nice downfield blocks was by . . . Kevin Riley. Even though he had terrible games against Oregon and USC it seems like the guy really wants to win.

  11. rollonubears Says:

riley was a clear leader in this game. showed a lot of poise. early on, with the fumble by best and the bad punt, it looked like they were about to collapse again, but riley never lost his cool, and i think it rubbed off on the team. they definitely keyed on best, as they have the last 3 games, but we were finally able to get the passing game going. marvin jones made some great grabs. riley was off on just a few throws. i think the receivers deserve a lot of credit for stepping up in this game, too.

  12. covinared Says:

GB7- Best was not on the field for the first 4-5 plays of the second half. He then came out of the locker room and immediately went out to play.

I noticed after Syd left the game, ucla tired to pick on conte and niabufe. niabufe held his own at corner.

We can’t expect to control games with our offensive line. I see more and more outside and option plays coming.

I hate to admit it, but we miss follett. the pass rush was almost non existent until the end. Costanzo and Browner looked good when they got in.

  13. Jabes Says:

We sure miss Follett, also Williams in coverage. Our linebackers are still struggling to cover TEs underneath — though Bishop did a nice job staying with the TE downfield so that only the perfect pass by UCLA could work. Nobody last year was as good as Bishop the older in short-range pass coverage, but Follett and Williams good enough. Kendricks and Mohammed have shown good hands if the ball is thrown right to them, but not necessarily good position. The INT to Kendricks could have been thrown over him for a TD — not to say he was responsible for the blown coverage downfield just that he was more lucky than good the pass came his way. Kendricks did well to hold on the ball of course.

Yes, I know, why doesn’t Gregory bring more blitzes to make the QB think and rush his throws more? Could it be that we are getting killed by runs up the middle when we do that?

  14. rollonubears Says:

i think we did try to apply a little more pressure yesterday, but all it did was lead to a little more offense for them. it’s a give and take, but we probably need to keep at it, because when a qb has all day to throw, eventually he’ll find someone open, especially with our DBs and a less-than-100% syd quan. hagan was back in 2008 form yesterday, which was good to see.

  15. Rocko Says:

I guess God wasn’t on ND side. Maybe someday Mays will get ejected for his defenseless head shots that he makes, when he gets to the NFL he will get his comeuppance.

This is blasphemy!!!!! What defenseless head shots are you referring to. The one play yesterday on the sidelines was a clear shot. Even the announcers made that comment.

  17. Easy Ed Says:

I wonder why Moren didn’t mention the dirty play of the U$C defense. You are absolutely right Rocko, Old Taylor Mays better get use to knee injuries because when he gets to the next level his cheap shots won’t be tolerated. BTW, nice interception Barkley!

  18. MoreNCsarecoming Says:

Although I didn’t watch the game it did pit both cellar dwellars and the fact that your team won pushed then to #8…that’s #8 in the Pac 10.
