J.O. can you ask Gregory why the defense only had 10 men on the field FOR 2 CONSECUTIVE PLAYS at the end?
Also, in your opinion is Best injured?
Awesome job by the players and JT to get a win in a place that has been tough on them. So many great efforts: Riley, Vereen, M.Jones, the O-Line, to name a few.
Alamar, and Gregory: not so sure.
I’m generally with Poole’s take. As long as we have coaches like Alamar and Gregory (try using 11 players), the only question will be Sun or Emerald. Frankly, Tedford is getting paid to do better…
A great win for the Bears and I was one that didn’t have much confidence going into Saturday’s game.
Allowing an offense as challenged as UCLA’s to run up 379 yards in 3 quarters is suspect. Maybe gregory’s experiment with the 3-4 has run its course.
Cal was giving up the yards but not many td’s. I believe our defense is good enough for us to win out so long as the offense can score 30 points a game. We were playing most of the game w/o our best player, and held up well. We need a better pass rush.
Yes – JO – please ask Coach T what happened with the defense w/ 10 men on the field. It’s unconscionable that this could happen and that no coaches – in the box or on the field – noticed.
Poole’s article is reasonable. I’m not brimming with confidence that the Bears will win at Arizona State, at Washington or that they’ll beat Stanford. I’m still uncomfortable with Tedford teams and road games. I think they are capable of beating all of them.
Oregon State is a big game coming up after Washington State. They are a quality team that has beaten the Bears three of the last four and twice in Berkeley. There’s another monkey for Cal to get off their back.
I didn’t realize Cal hadn’t won at the Rose Bowl since 1993. I knew Tedford hadn’t won there but 1993? That’s 16 years. It serves as a reminder of just how bad the Bears were before Tedford, whatever you may have to say about him.
Let’s face it, before Tedford they sucked. For decades. He’s won 2/3rds of his games over eight years. That hasn’t happened at Cal since Pappy Waldorf. Even though the Oregon and USC games were so disappointing this year, things are better at Cal than they’ve been since the 1950′s.
What the hell, I’m pulling for the Sun Bowl. When’s the last time we were in that game?
OMG! All the complaints. You guys sound like those snobby U$C fans. Look we have our issues but all and all, we are moving in the right direction. If you’re not happy with the state of affairs, I’m sure we can get Coach Gilberston or Holmoe to come back and put the program where it usually has been. It’s a process and I have more confidence in a good result with Tedford than I do without him. Give it a chance with quality facilities and see what we can do.
Tedford is getting paid ten times whatever Gilby and Holmoe ever got paid- I think we should expect it to be a bit better…
Tedford has also produced twenty times a better result than Giby and Holmoe ever got!

He is a nice guy too. Daddy had him to dinner a couple of times.
Here you go.
He is a really nice guy too. He eats his dinners by himself however. An outstanding USC alum!
Now now Rocko don’t be to hard on Moren. As a U$C fan he has just adjusted his moral compass a little so that it’s acceptable to have a murderer as the face of your “storied” program and to have the certain knowledge that your resurgence has been secured with the best players money can buy! Fight on!
Robert, as I responded in another post, I didn’t know about the 10 men at the time because the media was walking down to the field during those plays. Haven’t asked anyone about it.
I don’t think Best is hurt but I do think he was affected by the heat against UCLA. He wasn’t hitting the holes as hard as usual, and I think his asthma was bothering him.
for reasons still unknown to me, I did some research at this dreadful hour, and it turns out the story writer got his facts wrong.
Cal beat UCLA at the Rose Bowl in 1999, 17-0. link here: http://www.calbears.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/101699aaa.html. the Bears did not go 16 years between victories at UCLA.
JT, the 1999 win was later revoked because of NCAA violations. So on the record, the last win was 1993.
