Football: Tuesday night update

Cal held its weekly media luncheon today. Here’s the transcript of Jeff Tedford and Kevin Riley’s comments at today’s media luncheon.

The luncheon also saw appearances by safeties Brett Johnson and Sean Cattouse as well as wide receiver Alex Lagemann, and I will have full transcriptions of their comments tomorrow.

A couple of quick-hitters from today:

–Tedford said he still wasn’t sure of the status of nose tackle Derrick Hill (stinger) and left guard Matt Summers-Gavin (shoulder), who each missed Saturday’s win at ASU. Neither player practiced today.

–Tedford felt the officiating crew made the wrong call when they flagged nose tackle Aaron Tipoti for a personal foul against the Sun Devils. Tedord said Tipoti was simply running to the ball when an ASU player attempted to block him and he ended up on the turf. That being said, Tedford obviously expressed concern about all the penalties they were uncharacteristically called for Saturday.

–Tedford said the coaching staff considered replacing Giorgio Tavecchio with Vince D’Amato on the final kick but ultimately decided to stay with Tavecchio.

–Tedford said the prospect of Lagemann earning more playing time after coming up with three clutch catches against ASU will depend on the final game plan against Oregon State.

For those who have been able to see Kevin Riley without his helmet on lately, you may have noticed he’s growing quite a beard. There’s a reason for that. After the Bears lost to USC, Riley decided not to shave as a good luck charm. After the Bears beat UCLA in their next game, Riley said he wouldn’t shave until Cal lost again.

So Riley hopes to really get a mountain man beard going, although he admitted today that it’s getting a little out of control. But he’s committed to the facial hair for now.
