from http://blog.pennlive.com/davidjones/2009/11/whos_sore_about_running_up_the.html --

But I thought it was interesting how, when Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh went for two points with the score 48-21, that Carroll got chafed. Are you kidding me?

"I don't know what they were thinking with that,” Carroll said afterward.

Maybe that they wanted you to dance, Pete. Let’s see you dance now, cowboy.

“Hey, look at ’em all running in,” Harbaugh said on the way to the post-game handshake, as detected by Los Angeles Times columnist Chris Dufresne. Harbaugh was motioning toward the USC players and staff heading quickly to the lockers rather than pay respects to the Cardinal.

“Are you all right?” Carroll asked Harbaugh at midfield, apparently a cryptic query about the 2-point attempt.

“I’m great,” responded Harbaugh. “What’s your deal?”

Ha! Awesome response. Carroll’s deal is, he apparently he can’t grasp that what goes around comes around.

I don't recall Carroll ever "running up the score". You know, when you have 2nd and 3rd stringers playing, you need to get them work, you can't just take a knee. Tedford had Beau7 Sweeney throw twice in a blowout this season, which he usually never does. Was he trying to run up the score? No. If you are getting blown out, and you can't stop the other team, why does that make the other coach evil by running up the score. If you can't stop the other team's reserves, that on you. We all know what tryiong to run up the score looks like. Throwing a bomb in a blowout when you can take a knee is that. What Harbaugh did was that. My point is there shouldn't be a SC deserves that mentality- it only reflects negatively on Harbaugh.

As a Cal fan, I have been watching him closely over there and have been very impressed. This was very unimpressive, and knocks him down a good notch. You want to be happy for people that work hard and have passion and excellence in life. I could feel that way even for the Cardinal and Harbaugh.

Also, it doesn't matter if SC has "run things up" in the past. They have not with Carroll. Even if he had, 2 wrongs don't make a right. Harbaugh has it all going his way right now. Going for 2 only lowered his success by showing an utter lack of class. I think as Bears fans we would be shocked and deeply disappointed if Tedford ever did something like this. You know he would never. Despite all the criticisms of Tedford are now, and there are many that are appropriate, Tedford does a lot with a lot of class. I do love that about him and he represents the university at the highest level.

So “F” Pete Carroll. Borrowing a quote from Shaq, “Hey Pete how does Harbaugh’s A– taste?!”>>>>>> And it is just like your fines to make these kind of gloating, profane comments. Here is what we did against Stanford teams. 51-21 (2005), 42-0 (2006), 49-17 (2002), 44-21 (2003) and 45-23 (2008). (In 2007 we lost because we got robbed. On their final TD their WR pushed off on our DB). Our scores weren't being run up. You have to remember that Stanford was at the same level of play as your program was during the Holmoe years and they had now taken over for you. In many of those games those were 2nd and 3rd stringers playing by half. Never did PC go for a 2 point conversion when we were up by 24 in the 4th quarter. Only your fans would justify that kind of behavior.

Will, nice link.

It is true. I remember being at the Cal/SC game in 2001 when SC ran up the score to 55 and CAL had 7 or 10 points. It was pouring rain and we were the last people left in the stadium. That MFer coach scored another TD in the 4th quarter in the final few minutes. So "F" Pete Carroll. Borrowing a quote from Shaq, "Hey Pete how does Harbaugh's A-- taste?!"

And just ignore his ridiculous rhetoric; I know it's harder to side with what he's saying because of all of his bitterness, but I still think his points are valid.

Dan, I agree that Harbaugh going for two was ridiculous, but I not everyone would agree that Pete has won with class. Here's Nestor's take from Bruins Nation:

I do have to adnmit it is nice to see SC at 22nd. Even lower would be better.

Also, clearly Harbaugh seems like a very good coach. What he is doing at Stanford is every bit as impressive as what Tedford did for the Bears way back when. But a TOTAL lack of class with the 2 point conversion. I would sure like to hear his explanation for that. Nothing could convince me that wasn't classless. You might hate SC, heck we all hate SC. But Carroll has both won and lost with class and I don't see what Harbaugh's point was. It could very well come back to haunt him someday... as the Stanford brass now rushes to reward him with a raise and contract extension out of fear he is going to bolt for greener pastures.

Who cares if the Bears get ranked? I mean, really?? This team is not very good. And every time they get ranked they lose, choke or get hammered- or do all 3.

I thought the win was a good one in that they didn't give up- it was a scrappy, tough, hard fought, yet ugly, win. But a win is a win. This was a good matchup for Cal, since AZ throws the ball a lot, they throw it quickly in tempo and since Cal drops 8, it can be tough to find open receivers right away. With an inexperienced QB for the Cats, it made just enough of a difference for the Bears to squeak out a win.
But I have no illusions that this is even a good team that has even good coaching. As bad as AZ played, Cal should have easily won this game by 17-21 points if Cal was even a fairly good team.
Cal has been destroyed by the only 3 good teams it had played this season. Next week they get to play the 4th good team on their schedule. I hope I am wrong, but I think the "Big" Game will be ugly for the Bears unless Stanford totally has a letdown after the past 2 weeks.
Hopefully we can get a win in Seattle to close out the season for one of the most misleading 8-4 seasons ever.
