Basketball: Jacksonville game thread

QUICK POST-GAME UPDATE: Montgomery said Randle is fine after colliding with an opposing player when a screen was not called out. He also confirmed the MRI showed there is no structural damage to Theo Robertson’s right foot and the senior will be back on the floor as soon as he no longer is experiencing pain.

FINAL SCORE: Cal 79, Jacksonville 47. It’s over, at last. Amoke wound up with a career-high 15 points and eight rebounds. In his past two games, Amoke is averaging 13 points and 11.5 rebounds. Jax shot 28.3 percent and had 17 turnovers. Cal shot 52.7 percent, despite 10 minutes of garbage time.

SOMEWHERE LATE IN THE SECOND HALF: Just in case you were wondering, they’re still playing at Haas Pavilion. Just got a timeout with 3:49 left, and the Bears lead 72-43. Amoke and Randle each have 10 points to complement Christopher’s 23. Will have a final score ASAP.

11:14 2nd H: Can’t we change the channel? Bears lead 61-31. Jax shooting 29 percent with 16 TOs. Christopher has hit three straight 3-pointers and has 23 points. His reward: a spot on the bench, likely for the rest of the night. Randle also is sitting after a big collision with an opponent. Bak is back.

15:33 2nd H: Cal used a 9-0 run opening the half to extend its lead to 45-19, and there is no turning back. Christopher scored seven of those nine points and has 14. Randle has 10 points. The Bears are back up to 56 percent from the field, while Jax is stuck at 26.3 percent, and has 14 TOs.  Max and Seeley are in for Cal, which leads 50-24.

HALFTIME: Cal leads 36-19. Everybody is playing in this one. Bak has four points — all from the free throw line — along with a rebound and a blocked shot. Randle, Christopher and Amoke each have seven points for Cal, which is shooting 48 percent, but just 1-for-7 from the 3-point line. Jacksonville not putting up much of a fight — 27.6 percent from the field with 11 turnovers. Best moment of the first half: Some Cal student just won a free airline ticket by making a half-court shot. Jacksonville may want to sign this guy at halftime.

3:40 1st H: Cal leads 32-15. Bears are shooting 57 percent, Jax just 26 percent. There is little evidence the Dolphins are about to make a move on Cal.

5:53 1st H: A work of art this is not. Nine turnovers for the Dolphins, seven for the Bears. Cal leads 28-15. Bears are shooting 59 percent, Jax just 29 percent. Only bad news for Bears: Sanders-Frison picked up PF No. 2 with 8:59 left. Randle and Amoke each have seven points. Bak Bak is in.

11:47 1st H: Bears lead 17-7, as Jacksonville is shooting 3-for-12.  But Monty was very unhappy with a careless Randle pass on a 2-on-1 fastbreak that became a turnover just before the timeout.

15:00 1st H: Cal leads 10-5. The Bears jumped out to a 4-0 lead, then Jacksonville tied it at 5-all, thanks mostly to Cal missing three of four FTs. But Gutierrez hit a 3-pointer and Christopher scored inside to push the Bears back in front. Sanders-Frison jumped picked up his first foul and was replaced by Omondi Amoke.

STARTING LINEUPS: Cal will go with Jerome Randle, Patrick Christopher, Jorge Gutierrez, Jamal Boykin and Markhuri Sanders-Frison. Jacksonville starts Ben Smith, Travis Cohn, Glenn Powell, Lehmon Colbert and Ayron Hardy.
